Which PoE network switch do you actually need?

Most PC builders think of a switch as a dumb box that just splits a cable, and for plain data that's fairly accurate. PoE changes it, because the switch is now also a power supply feeding cameras, access points and phones. The number that matters most is the total PoE budget in watts, not the port count. An 8-port switch with a 65W budget can't run eight devices that each draw 15W, no matter what the box says.

Entry-tier unmanaged switches, like the TP-Link TL-SG1005P or Netgear GS308P class, are plug and play. They're fine for two or three IP cameras or an access point. You get no VLANs, no port-level monitoring and usually no way to see which port is overloaded. Sweet-spot units are smart or fully managed, such as TP-Link JetStream and Omada, Netgear's smart range or Aruba Instant On. They add VLANs, QoS, port scheduling and PoE per-port limits. That's what lets you isolate cameras from your main network and reboot a hung device by power-cycling its port. Enthusiast and business-grade switches add Layer 3 routing, 10G SFP+ uplinks, stacking and much larger budgets, often 250W to over 400W.

Diminishing returns hit quickly. Past a certain point you're paying for backplane capacity and routing you'll never saturate on a home or small office network. Spend instead on a larger PoE budget and a decent uplink.

Upgrading and technical nuances

PoE comes in three flavours that you really need to understand. 802.3af delivers up to 15.4W per port, enough for most cameras and basic access points. 802.3at (PoE+) gives 30W, which suits PTZ cameras and Wi-Fi 6 or 7 access points. 802.3bt (PoE++) goes to 60W or 90W for pan-tilt units with heaters, thin clients and some LED lighting. Switches negotiate power per device, so a PoE+ switch happily serves af devices, but a budget of 120W can only support four fully loaded 30W ports.

Speed is the other trap. Gigabit remains standard, but modern Wi-Fi 7 access points often have 2.5GbE ports, and a gigabit switch will bottleneck them. If you're buying today, a few multi-gig PoE ports are worth the premium. Also check the uplink. Eight gigabit cameras and an access point feeding a single gigabit uplink to your router or NAS is fine for cameras, but not for a busy server. An SFP+ 10G uplink gives you room, and it matters more for a file server or NAS than for cameras.

Fanless designs are silent and have no moving parts to fail, but they run hot with high PoE loads because the metal chassis is the only heatsink. Fan-cooled units handle bigger budgets at the cost of noise, which matters if the switch sits in a home office. Managed switches also differ in firmware. Omada and UniFi use a central controller, while others are standalone web interfaces. If you already run a TP-Link router or access points, staying in one ecosystem makes adoption far simpler. Browse the wider Networking range to match switches with gateways and access points.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with the real power draw of your devices, then add about 20% headroom. Add up the maximum wattage on each camera or access point datasheet, not the typical figure. Check whether the budget is the total or only on certain ports, since some switches reserve full wattage per class, not actual draw.

Cabling is where most problems start. PoE runs up to 100 metres on proper copper Cat5e or better, but cheap copper-clad aluminium (CCA) cable has higher resistance, runs warm, drops voltage and often fails at longer runs. Always buy pure copper. Cat6 is a sensible default for runs that might later carry 2.5G or higher. Check the Cables & Connectors range for patch leads and termination gear, and keep PoE bundles loose rather than tightly cinched, since heat builds up in dense bundles.

Next, consider the physical side. Desktop units are small, but 16 and 24 port switches are typically 1U rack mount at 19 inches. Check whether rack ears are included, how deep the chassis is and where the vents are. A closed cabinet with no airflow will cook a fanless PoE switch. If you're building a home NAS or surveillance server alongside it, a small Computers system with a decent NIC works well as an NVR host.

Also verify the following before you buy:

Confirm the power supply is internal (a standard IEC cable) rather than a bulky external brick, which is easier to lose and harder to replace. Check for surge protection on ports if cameras are mounted outside, because lightning-induced surges travel down Ethernet. Finally, look for SFP ports if you plan a fibre link between buildings.

Brands and local warranty

TP-Link is the big value option in Australia, with the Easy Smart, JetStream and Omada lines covering most home and small office needs. Ubiquiti UniFi suits people who want a polished single-pane controller. Netgear, Aruba Instant On and Cisco Business cater to small business with strong management features. MikroTik offers extremely capable but fiddly hardware for tinkerers.

Local warranty matters more with switches than most parts because they run 24/7 and failure takes out your cameras or Wi-Fi. A genuine Australian warranty means you deal with a local support channel and quick replacement, not shipping a unit overseas or fighting a grey-import seller who disappears. Under Australian Consumer Law, you're also entitled to remedies for faulty goods, and buying from a local retailer makes that straightforward. Keep your invoice and note the serial number.

Frequently asked questions

How big a PoE budget do I need?

Add the maximum draw of each device and add roughly 20% headroom. Four cameras at 8W and two access points at 20W comes to about 72W, so look at a switch with a budget of 90W or more. Leaving headroom also lets the switch run cooler.

Can I plug a non-PoE device into a PoE port?

Yes. Standards-compliant PoE switches detect whether a device is PoE-capable before sending power, so a laptop or NAS is safe. Passive PoE gear, which sends power without negotiation, is the exception and can be damaged by mismatched voltage.

Do I need a managed switch for a home setup?

Not always. An unmanaged switch is fine for a few cameras or one access point. If you want to separate IoT devices and cameras on their own VLAN or remotely restart a port, a smart managed switch is worth the extra money.

Will a gigabit PoE switch bottleneck my Wi-Fi?

It can with modern access points that have 2.5GbE ports. A single client rarely exceeds gigabit, but combined traffic on a busy access point can. Buy multi-gig PoE ports if you've picked a high-end access point.

What cable should I use for PoE?

Use solid copper Cat5e at minimum, with Cat6 preferred for new runs. Avoid CCA cable, since the higher resistance wastes power as heat and causes dropouts on long runs.
