Collection: UniFi

Which UniFi gear do you actually need?

Most PC builders who land on UniFi are tired of a consumer router that drops out under load and has no real VLAN or client visibility. UniFi is a controller-driven ecosystem, so you are really picking a gateway, switching and access points that all report into one Network app. The tiers differ in the engineering, not just the price.

At the entry tier, you are looking at an all-in-one gateway such as a Cloud Gateway Ultra or Dream Router style unit, plus a single access point. These use compact ARM-based SoCs that route and run the controller on the same box. They handle typical home fibre or NBN connections well, but the bottleneck is deep packet inspection. Turn on IDS/IPS and throughput can fall well below the raw routing figure, so read the vendor's IPS numbers, not just the headline WAN speed.

The sweet spot is a dedicated gateway with more CPU headroom and multi-gig WAN or LAN ports, a PoE switch, and one to three ceiling-mount Wi-Fi 7 access points. This is where your Wi-Fi stops being limited by a gateway-integrated radio. A ceiling AP with a 2.5GbE uplink, proper antenna placement and a 6GHz band will outperform a "mesh" box on a shelf, because 6GHz offers wide, clean channels but poor wall penetration, so placement matters more than radio count.

The enthusiast tier brings rack-mount gateways, aggregation switches with 10G SFP+, and NVR storage for cameras. The gains here are real but narrow: more switching capacity, more PoE budget, redundancy and 10G backbones. Diminishing returns hit fast if your internet is 100 to 1000 Mbps and your devices are mostly Wi-Fi. A 10G core makes sense for a NAS, a workstation and a proper homelab, not for streaming and gaming.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The first trap is PoE standards. Basic APs may run on 802.3af (about 15W per port), but many Wi-Fi 7 APs want 802.3at PoE+ (about 30W) to run all radios and ports at full capability. If you pair them with an older af-only switch, the AP may boot with reduced features or not at all. Always compare the AP's power requirement against the per-port and total PoE budget of the switch, not only the port count.

The second is multi-gig. A Wi-Fi 7 AP with a 2.5GbE port needs a switch port that negotiates 2.5G, otherwise you cap the uplink at 1G. Cat5e usually handles 2.5G over typical home runs, but for anything you are pulling through walls today, run Cat6 or better and save yourself a second job later. Quality Cables & Connectors make a difference on longer PoE runs, where cheap copper-clad aluminium cable causes voltage drop and flaky links.

Third, understand where the routing happens. Routing between VLANs on a Layer 3 capable switch is hardware offloaded, while routing through a gateway CPU is not. If you move large files between a PC and a NAS on separate VLANs, that distinction decides whether you see line rate. Likewise, if your motherboard has a 2.5GbE or 10GbE port, check that your Motherboards NIC and the switch port match, or you are paying for speed you never use.

For benchmarking the sweet spot, look at the current Wi-Fi 7 ceiling APs in the U7 Pro family for general homes, step up to the Max or XG variants for dense or high-throughput use, and keep the Lite models for secondary rooms. Mesh-capable wireless uplinks work, but a wired backhaul is always faster and more stable than a wireless one.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with the mounting. Ceiling APs need a clear mounting surface, and some include a wall plate, but you should confirm that the bracket suits plasterboard or a ceiling tile. Rack gear needs depth, not just rack units, so measure your cabinet, or check your Computer Cases if you plan to build a controller or NAS alongside it.

Next, check power and heat. A rack switch with a high PoE budget draws a lot, and the fans can be loud in a living space. Fanless switches are silent but limited in PoE output. If you place a gateway in a cupboard, leave airflow, since sustained throughput heats ARM SoCs and can trigger throttling. A small UPS is cheap insurance, because UniFi gear will happily reboot mid-update when the power flickers. If you are building your own controller or NAS, a reliable PSU from Power Supplies matters just as much as the network side.

Check the controller approach too. Cloud-managed gateways run the Network app for you, while a standalone setup needs a host. If you self-host on a mini PC, one of the Computers with a small SSD from Solid State Drives (SSD) is plenty, but make sure backups are automated.

Also confirm the WAN side. NBN connection types, such as FTTP, HFC or FTTC, may need specific ports and a separate ONT or modem. Check whether your gateway has an SFP+ or 2.5G WAN port before assuming it will plug straight in. Finally, verify the number of Ethernet ports on your switch against what you need today plus a few spare, since PoE ports run out quickly once cameras and APs go in.

Brands and local warranty

Ubiquiti is the name behind UniFi, and the ecosystem works best when you stay within it. Mixing in a different vendor's switch or AP is possible, but you lose the single pane of glass. If you want a different route, TP-Link Omada offers a comparable controller-based approach, usually at lower prices, though the app polish and ecosystem differ. For general expansion, our Networking range covers switches, adapters and more.

Warranty matters more than most people expect. Networking gear lives in ceilings and walls, so a failure means a ladder, not a quick swap. Buying from an Australian retailer means your rights run through Australian Consumer Law and a local RMA process, rather than shipping a unit offshore and waiting weeks. It also helps with correct AU power plugs, stock of PoE injectors and clear return paths if a firmware or hardware fault appears.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a UniFi gateway to use UniFi access points and switches?

Not strictly. APs and switches work with a controller running on a host, and they can sit behind another router. But you lose some features, like integrated traffic insight, firewall rules and unified client views. A UniFi gateway is the cleanest way to get everything managed together.

Will a Wi-Fi 7 access point speed up my Wi-Fi 6 devices?

Not on the radio side, since older clients still connect at their own maximum speed. You will often still see gains from better band steering, more capable radios and a faster wired uplink. The real jump comes with Wi-Fi 7 clients, which can use wider channels and multi-link operation.

How many access points do I need?

It depends on construction material, not floor area alone. Brick, concrete and double-glazing absorb signal, especially on 6GHz. A single ceiling AP often covers an apartment, while a two-storey house usually wants one per level, placed centrally.

Is PoE worth it compared with plugging in power adapters?

Yes for APs and cameras. One cable carries data and power, which makes ceiling installs cleaner and lets you reboot devices remotely. Just match the PoE standard and total budget to your devices.

Can I use my existing Cat5e cabling?

Often, yes. Cat5e handles gigabit comfortably and usually 2.5G over typical home lengths. For new runs, Cat6 or better is worth the small extra cost, particularly for a PoE load and a 10G future.
