Which tablet do you actually need?

Most PC builders approach tablets the same way they approach a GPU: look at the headline number and assume bigger is better. That falls apart quickly here, because what separates tiers is the panel, the memory and storage type, and how long the maker keeps pushing updates.

Entry-level tablets (think Samsung Galaxy Tab A, Lenovo Tab, Xiaomi Redmi Pad) use 60Hz or 90Hz LCD panels, typically 3 to 4GB of RAM, and slower eMMC or basic UFS storage. They're fine for streaming, reading and a kitchen-bench recipe screen. The gaps show up in multitasking, where low RAM forces apps to reload, and in the screen, which often sits around 400 nits with weak contrast.

The sweet spot is the mid-range, such as the Galaxy Tab S FE line, the standard iPad, or the Xiaomi Pad series. You get a sharper 90 to 120Hz panel, 6 to 8GB of RAM, faster UFS storage and a stronger SoC. Scrolling feels smoother and stylus latency drops, which matters if you sketch or take handwritten notes.

At the enthusiast end (iPad Pro, Galaxy Tab S Ultra, Surface Pro) you get OLED or mini-LED panels with real contrast, 12 to 16GB of RAM, fast storage and desktop-style multitasking. The extras are genuine, but diminishing returns hit hard. A premium panel is lovely, yet if you mostly watch YouTube and use a remote desktop app, you're paying for headroom you'll rarely touch.

Upgrading and technical nuances

Unlike a desktop, you can't upgrade a tablet later. The RAM is LPDDR soldered next to the SoC, and storage is soldered too. Pick your capacity on day one, and lean generous. Storage capacity also affects speed on some models, since larger tiers can have more parallel NAND channels. This is the same logic as buying a bigger Solid State Drives (SSD) for better sustained throughput, except you can't swap it afterwards.

Panel technology is the biggest real-world difference. LCD (IPS) is bright and cheap but has limited contrast. OLED gives true blacks and fast pixel response, though some panels use PWM dimming that bothers sensitive eyes at low brightness. Mini-LED sits between the two, with local dimming zones that boost HDR highlights but can bloom around bright text on dark backgrounds. If you already run a good desktop display from our Monitors range, you'll notice these trade-offs straight away.

Chip choice matters for longevity. Apple's M-series iPads and Snapdragon 8-class Android tablets stay snappy for years, while budget MediaTek or older Snapdragon chips slow down sooner. Check how many years of OS and security updates the maker promises, because a fast tablet with two years of patches ages worse than a modest one with six.

Connectivity is a quiet compatibility trap. Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 only delivers its benefits if your router supports it, so pairing a new tablet with a decent Networking setup, such as a TP-Link router, makes a visible difference for game streaming from your gaming rig. Also check whether USB-C carries video output. Some tablets support DisplayPort alt mode for an external screen, while many budget models only charge and transfer data.

Using a tablet as a second screen for your desktop is a popular trick. Apps like Spacedesk or Duet Display work over Wi-Fi or USB, but wired is lower latency and more reliable. For a dedicated secondary display, a proper monitor still wins on latency and colour accuracy. If you're building or upgrading a rig to sit alongside the tablet, our Computers range is worth a look.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with screen size and weight. An 11 inch tablet is easy to hold for long sessions, while 13 to 14 inch models are great on a desk or stand but tiring in bed. A tablet weighing around 600g is noticeably more comfortable than one at 700g after an hour.

Check the charger and cable. Many makers now ship only a cable, or a slow charger, so a decent USB-C Power Delivery brick may be a separate purchase. Quality Cables & Connectors matter here. A cheap cable can cap charging speed or fail to carry video or fast data, and 100W-rated cables are overkill for most tablets but won't hurt.

Think about accessories early. Keyboard covers, stylus pens and magnetic cases are often model-specific, and stylus generations are not interchangeable. A stylus that costs more than a mid-range SSD is a real thing, so budget for it.

Cellular versus Wi-Fi only is another one. If you'll tether to your phone, skip the cellular model and save the premium. If you want a travel device, confirm the eSIM and band support for Australian networks.

Battery life varies with panel type and refresh rate. A 120Hz OLED will drain faster than a 60Hz LCD, so look at the battery capacity in Wh and independent runtime tests, not just the "up to" claim. Finally, check the storage: base models with 64GB fill up fast once apps and offline media pile on, and microSD slots are only on some Android models.

Brands and local warranty

Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, Xiaomi, Huawei, Microsoft and Amazon (Fire) all sell reputable tablets in Australia. Apple and Samsung lead on long-term software support and resale value. Lenovo and Xiaomi offer strong value in the mid-range. Microsoft's Surface line suits anyone who wants full Windows and a laptop-like workflow.

Local warranty matters more than most people think. Under Australian Consumer Law, products must be of acceptable quality, and a genuine local retailer and manufacturer warranty means repairs, replacements and battery issues go through an Australian support channel rather than an overseas shipping headache. Grey imports can come with no local coverage, the wrong charger plug, or missing network band support. Buy from an authorised Australian seller, keep your invoice, and register the device if the brand asks.

Frequently asked questions

How much storage do I need on a tablet?

For general use, 128GB is a sensible minimum today. If you download games, store offline video or work with large creative files, 256GB or more gives breathing room. Because storage isn't upgradable on most tablets, buying a bit more upfront is cheaper than being forced to replace the device.

Is a more expensive tablet always faster?

Not always. Premium models have stronger chips and faster memory, but a mid-range tablet with a good SoC and 6 to 8GB of RAM handles everyday tasks well. You pay more for OLED panels, thinner builds and higher refresh rates than raw speed.

Can I use a tablet as a second monitor for my PC?

Yes, using software like Spacedesk, Duet Display or Apple's Sidecar. A wired USB connection gives the lowest latency, but it's still not a replacement for a proper gaming or colour-accurate display. It suits chat windows, monitoring tools and reference material.

Do I need 5G or cellular?

Only if you regularly work away from Wi-Fi and don't want to tether to your phone. Wi-Fi only models are cheaper, and a phone hotspot covers most occasional needs.

Will any stylus work with my tablet?

No. Styluses use different technologies, such as Apple Pencil, Samsung S Pen and various active pen standards, and they're typically tied to specific models. Always check the exact tablet model before buying a pen.
