Collection: CPU Air Coolers

Air coolers aren't as flashy as liquid, and they can be bulky, sometimes blocking RAM slots or making case access a pain. But for reliable, no-fuss cooling without the pump noise or leak risk, they're often the sensible choice. We've got Deepcool CPU coolers and all the bits you need to get them fitted, including mounting kits for Intel LGA 1700 and AMD AM4/AM5 sockets. Make sure you've got the right bracket for your setup. If you're building with AMD Ryzen CPUs, proper thermal management is crucial. Don't skimp on cooling, even if it's just air.

Which CPU air cooler do you actually need?

Most PC builders get stuck choosing a cooler by price or by how big it looks, when the real question is how many watts your CPU pulls under sustained load. Entry-level coolers, like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 style single-tower designs or the stock-style top-down units, use four heatpipes at most and a fairly thin fin stack. They handle 65W chips such as a Ryzen 5 or Core Ultra 5 non-K very well, but they start to struggle once a chip sits above 125W for minutes at a time. The fins saturate, the fan ramps up, and noise climbs fast.

The sweet spot is the dual-tower, six-heatpipe category: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120, DeepCool AK620 and Phantom Spirit, and Scythe Mugen. Two fin stacks roughly double the surface area, and the fan sits between them so airflow is pulled through both. That lets the fans run slower for the same temperature, which is the real win. For most Ryzen 7 and Core Ultra 7 builds, this tier lands within a few degrees of far pricier options.

Enthusiast coolers, such as the Noctua NH-D15 G2 and the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5, offer better fin spacing, tighter baseplate machining, higher quality fan bearings and more refined mounting. The gain over a good dual-tower is usually 2 to 5°C, or the same temperature at lower noise. That is where diminishing returns kick in hard. If you're chasing a flagship chip at full all-core load, the premium is justified. For gaming, it mostly buys quietness and polish.

If you're pulling 250W or more for rendering or compiling, look at a 360mm AIO instead. You'll find those under CPU Cooling, and the wider Fans, Heatsinks & Cooling range covers extra fans and paste.

Upgrading and technical nuances

Platform matters more than people expect. AM5 uses the same mounting hole spacing as AM4, so many older brackets carry over, and AM5 boards ship with a backplate that you remove or reuse depending on the cooler. Intel LGA1851 keeps the same hole spacing as LGA1700 and LGA1200 (the 1700 and 1851 sockets share it), so most LGA1700 coolers fit, though you should confirm the maker lists 1851 support. The catch with LGA1700-era bracket reuse is contact pressure. Some thin-baseplate coolers need the right standoffs to avoid uneven paste spread.

Heatpipe count is not the whole story. Pipe diameter (6mm versus 8mm), how they're soldered to the fins, and whether they run through a direct-touch baseplate or a copper base all change heat transfer. Direct-touch designs can leave small gaps between pipes, which is fine on large heat spreaders but less ideal on small ones. Modern chips also have hotspots under the core complexes. Their heat is concentrated in a small area, so a flat, well-finished base matters more than raw fin count.

Fan design is the other lever. Fluid dynamic bearings (Noctua, be quiet!) run quietly and last longer than cheaper sleeve bearings. PWM fans with high static pressure, like those on the Arctic Freezer 36, push air through dense fin stacks better than open-frame case fans. Fin density on tower coolers is a trade-off: tighter fins add surface area but need pressure to pull air through at low RPM.

For a budget pick, the Thermalright Assassin X 120 and Arctic Freezer 36 are tidy single-tower options. If you want a gaming rig with a mid-range chip, the Peerless Assassin class is hard to beat.

Practical things to check before buying

Clearance is where most mistakes happen. Measure cooler height against your case, because many dual-tower coolers stand 155mm to 165mm tall. Compact mid-towers and small form factor builds often cap out at 150mm or lower. Check the manufacturer's stated maximum cooler height, not just the case's visual size, and remember tempered glass side panels add no room.

RAM clearance is next. A large front fan on a dual-tower will overhang the first DDR5 memory slot, so tall heat spreaders on kits can clash. Low-profile modules or a raised fan bracket fix it. Some coolers let you shift the front fan up, which costs a little performance but saves the build. Also check the top PCIe slot. Large coolers can crowd the area near your motherboard VRM heatsinks or the first M.2 slot, especially if you're installing a Solid State Drive (SSD) with its own heatsink.

Weight matters on a vertically mounted GPU or if you move the PC. Heavy coolers over 1.3kg can stress the socket in transit, so pack carefully or add a support bracket if you're shipping it.

Cabling is simple, but check that the CPU fan header supports PWM and has the amperage for the fan set. Daisy-chaining two fans on one header is fine; adding RGB may need a separate header and cables. Airflow also affects your graphics card temperatures. A good front-to-back path with the cooler pushing air toward a rear exhaust fan keeps the whole case happier, and a quality power supply with a clean layout helps keep that path unobstructed.

Finally, check thermal paste. Most coolers include a usable tube, but a spare is worth having if you re-mount.

Brands and local warranty

Reputable air cooler brands include Noctua, be quiet!, Thermalright, DeepCool, Arctic, Scythe, Cooler Master and Corsair. Each has a slightly different focus: Noctua and be quiet! lean toward quiet premium builds, Thermalright and DeepCool offer strong value, and Arctic sits comfortably in the budget to mid-range bracket with solid fans.

Buying through an Australian retailer matters because warranty claims go through local channels. A fan bearing failure or a bent mounting bracket is a hassle when it has to be returned overseas, and consumer law covers goods sold locally. Keep your invoice, and photograph any damage on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Is an air cooler good enough for a modern high-end CPU?

For gaming and general work, yes. A quality dual-tower handles most chips up to around 200W without drama. For sustained all-core workloads on flagship parts, a 360mm AIO gives more thermal headroom.

Will my old cooler fit AM5 or LGA1851?

Often yes. AM5 keeps AM4 hole spacing and LGA1851 matches LGA1700. Always check the brand's compatibility list and confirm you have the right brackets.

How much does fan noise really change between tiers?

Quite a lot. A larger dual-tower runs slower for the same temperature, so it sounds smoother under load. Premium fans also use better bearings, which reduce tonal whine.

Do I need to replace thermal paste when remounting?

Yes. Clean the old paste with isopropyl alcohol and apply fresh paste so the contact surface stays even.

Can a big cooler damage my motherboard?

Rarely, but heavy coolers can stress the board during transport. Remove the cooler or add support when shipping the PC.
