Which best seller do you actually need?

Most PC builders look at a best sellers list and assume the top item is the one to grab. A best seller is usually the product that suits the most people at a sensible price, which makes it a good starting point but not automatically the right pick for your build. What matters is what changes between entry, sweet-spot and enthusiast tiers, and where the extra money stops buying real performance.

Take Desktop Memory. Entry DDR5 runs around 5200 to 5600 MT/s with loose timings. The sweet spot is a 6000 MT/s kit at CL30 to CL36, which on AM5 lets the memory controller and Infinity Fabric run in a stable 1:1 ratio. Enthusiast kits at 7200 MT/s and above push bandwidth higher, but latency barely improves, and many boards need manual tuning to hold them stable. For gaming, lower latency at a sane speed usually beats raw bandwidth.

Storage follows the same pattern. A PCIe 5.0 drive doubles sequential speeds over PCIe 4.0, but everyday loading depends more on random 4K performance at low queue depth, where the gap is small. Gen5 controllers also run hot and often throttle without a decent heatsink. For most people a quality Solid State Drive (SSD) on PCIe 4.0 with a DRAM cache is the better buy.

Upgrading and technical nuances

Platform choice comes first. AM5 and LGA1851 both use DDR5 only, so there is no mixing old memory in. On Motherboards, the real difference between tiers is power delivery. A budget board might have eight power stages with a thin aluminium plate over them. A mid-range ASUS TUF Gaming or MSI MAG Tomahawk usually steps up to more phases rated at higher amperage, with thicker heatsinks. That keeps VRM temperatures down under sustained all-core loads such as rendering. Premium Gigabyte AORUS Master or ROG Strix boards add more phases, extra PCIe 5.0 lanes and faster onboard networking. Those suit a flagship chip or heavy overclocking, but they add little for a mid-range gaming rig.

For CPUs & Processors, put your money where your workload is. Gaming usually favours cache and single-thread speed, while editing and compiling reward core count. Match the board chipset to the chip so you are not paying for features you will never use.

On the memory side, Corsair Vengeance, Kingston Fury and G.Skill Ripjaws are the proven sweet-spot lines. Step up to G.Skill Trident Z5 or Corsair Dominator only if you want tighter binning or better looks. Two sticks are generally more stable than four, because four dual-rank modules load the memory controller harder and often force lower speeds.

For cooling, the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 is the standard sweet-spot air cooler. Its dual towers and heatpipes handle most mainstream chips quietly. Moving to an Arctic Liquid Freezer AIO mainly gives you better heat transfer to a radiator, lower noise at load on hot chips and a tidier look. Browse CPU Cooling and Fans, Heatsinks & Cooling with your chip's real heat output in mind. Fan bearing type matters too: fluid dynamic bearings tend to stay quiet longer than cheap sleeve designs.

For Power Supplies, look for ATX 3.1 units with a native 12V-2x6 connector if you run a modern high-end GPU. Seasonic Focus and Corsair RMx are reliable benchmarks. A good unit uses quality capacitors, tighter voltage regulation and handles the short power spikes that modern GPUs produce. Our ATX Power Supply range covers the standard desktop form factor.

Practical things to check before buying

Measure before you click. Tall RAM heatspreaders can clash with big air coolers, so check the cooler's stated memory clearance. Dual-tower coolers like the Peerless Assassin are generally fine with standard-height kits, but fancy RGB modules can be taller. Check cooler height against the side panel in your Computer Cases, and confirm radiator support and mounting positions if you want an AIO.

For graphics, check card length and thickness. Many current cards take three slots and can cover M.2 sockets on your board. Check the case's maximum GPU length and whether your motherboard's M.2 slots stay accessible. When browsing Graphics Cards / GPU, also check the power connector. A 12V-2x6 cable needs to be fully seated and should not be bent sharply right at the plug. Leave room between the connector and the side panel, and consider quality Cables & Connectors if your PSU's cable is too short.

Thermals deserve a look too. Gen5 SSDs need airflow or a proper heatsink, and a case with a solid front panel can starve a hot GPU. If you are building around a display, a good Monitor should match your GPU. A fast panel is wasted on a card that cannot drive it, and the reverse is just as true. If you would rather skip the compatibility maths, pre-built Computers are an option.

Do not forget connectivity. A solid Networking setup, such as a TP-Link router or adapter, matters if your PC sits far from the modem.

Brands and local warranty

Reputable names across this category include Corsair, Kingston, G.Skill, Samsung, Crucial, WD_BLACK, ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, Seasonic, Thermalright, Arctic and TP-Link. They differ in support quality and RMA speed as much as in build quality.

Genuine Australian warranty matters because a fault is handled locally. Under Australian Consumer Law, products must be of acceptable quality regardless of the brand's own terms, but a grey-import item can leave you waiting on overseas shipping and arguing over coverage. Buying from an Australian retailer with local distributor backing means faster replacements and proper paperwork. Keep your invoice and serial numbers handy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the top best seller always the right choice for me?

Not always. It usually reflects the best value for the widest audience, so it suits most builds. Check that it fits your platform, case and workload before buying.

How much RAM do I need today?

16GB is workable for basic use, but 32GB in a two-stick DDR5 kit is the practical sweet spot for gaming and multitasking. Go higher only for heavy editing, virtual machines or large datasets.

Will faster memory noticeably improve my frame rates?

Slightly, mostly at the low end of the frame rate graph. Beyond a well-tuned 6000 MT/s kit with decent timings, gains are small, and stability usually matters more than headline speed.

Do I need a PCIe 5.0 SSD?

Probably not. Large sequential transfers are quicker, but typical loading and gaming are almost identical to a good PCIe 4.0 drive. Heat is also an issue on Gen5.

Can I use an older power supply with a new GPU?

Often yes, with an adapter, but a native ATX 3.1 unit with a 12V-2x6 connector is cleaner and safer. Make sure the wattage covers your GPU's spikes, not just its average draw.
