Which Ubiquiti gear do you actually need?

Most PC builders will spend weeks agonising over a GPU, then plug the whole rig into whatever router the ISP posted out. Ubiquiti's UniFi range fixes that, but the lineup is confusing until you see what actually changes between tiers. It's a management ecosystem as much as a hardware range: gateway, switches and access points all live in one UniFi Network console.

At the entry tier, think Cloud Gateway Ultra, a U6 Lite or U7 Lite access point, and a small PoE switch like the USW Lite 8 PoE. The gateway handles routing, firewalling and the controller in one box. The trade-off is throughput and headroom. Entry gateways have a single gigabit WAN, and switching on IDS/IPS threat inspection costs real routing performance because the SoC inspects every packet. Entry access points use 2x2 radios, which is fine for phones and laptops, since most client devices only run two spatial streams anyway.

The sweet spot is a U7 Pro or similar Wi-Fi 7 access point, a multi-gig-capable gateway such as the Cloud Gateway Max or a Dream Machine, and a switch with 2.5GbE PoE ports. Here you gain a 2.5GbE uplink on the AP so the radio isn't capped by a gigabit cable, 6GHz support, and a gateway that holds near line rate with inspection enabled. Diminishing returns hit at the enthusiast end (Dream Machine Pro Max, Enterprise-line switches, 10G SFP+ aggregation). Extra radio chains mainly help airtime when many clients are active, not single-device speed. Unless you're running a NAS, a homelab or multiple 2.5GbE or 10GbE workstations, that money is better spent on wired backhaul and good AP placement.

Upgrading and technical nuances

Wi-Fi generation matters, but not how the box says. A Wi-Fi 6 AP like the U6+ or U6 Pro is still excellent if your devices are mostly Wi-Fi 6 or older. Wi-Fi 7 brings 6GHz with wider channels, plus Multi-Link Operation, which lets a compatible client use multiple bands at once for lower latency and better resilience. The catch is that you only see the benefit with Wi-Fi 7 clients, and 320MHz channels are rarely practical in a crowded suburb. Today's best upgrade is usually the U7 Pro for its 2.5GbE port and 6GHz capacity, rather than chasing the biggest model.

Gateway choice is where people get bitten. Advertised routing speed is measured with minimal features. Turn on IDS/IPS, deep packet inspection and several VLANs, and real throughput can drop well below the headline. If you have a fast NBN plan, check the figure with threat management enabled, not the best case. For the switching layer, look at total PoE budget rather than port count. A Lite 8 PoE has a modest power budget, and a couple of PoE+ cameras and an AP can eat it quickly. Pro Max and Enterprise switches add higher budgets, 2.5GbE ports and SFP+ uplinks, which matter once your PC, NAS and AP all want more than gigabit.

If you're building a new PC, check your Motherboards for onboard 2.5GbE so you can actually use a multi-gig switch port. Plenty of boards in the ASUS TUF and MSI Tomahawk families include it, while cheaper boards may stay at gigabit. If you want to compare ecosystems, TP-Link Omada is the closest rival, and our Networking range covers both.

Practical things to check before buying

Power is the first gotcha. Many UniFi access points ship without a PoE injector, so you need either a PoE switch or a separate injector. Check the standard too: 802.3af tops out around 15W, 802.3at around 30W, and some higher-end APs and cameras want the full 802.3at to enable all features. Running an AP on insufficient PoE can quietly disable radio chains or ports.

Cabling comes next. Cat5e handles 2.5GbE fine over normal home runs, but I'd pull Cat6 if you're running new cable through walls, mainly for future-proofing and better tolerance for PoE heat in bundles. Avoid copper-clad aluminium cable, which drops voltage and fails PoE loads. Good patch leads and keystones from Cables & Connectors are cheap insurance. For SFP+ links, a DAC is easiest between nearby devices, while fibre suits longer runs.

Think about placement. Ceiling-mounted APs generally perform best central in the home, and one well-placed AP beats two stuffed in a cupboard. Gateways and switches can run warm, so rack or shelf them somewhere ventilated. If you're housing them near your PC, remember that a Computer Cases airflow setup won't help a switch sitting on top of a PSU shroud. Larger Pro and Enterprise switches have fans, so check noise if the rack is in a living space. Finally, confirm which controller you're using. UniFi Network runs on the gateway console with no subscription needed for basics, but Protect cameras need storage inside the console or an NVR.

Brands and local warranty

Ubiquiti is the headline brand here, with UniFi as the main line and older EdgeRouter gear for those who prefer manual configuration. TP-Link Omada, and its Deco mesh range, are worth considering when you want similar capability at lower cost. For complete systems, our Computers range sits alongside the network gear.

Buying through an Australian reseller matters more than people think. Network gear is hard to diagnose, and a faulty PoE port or unstable radio can take days of troubleshooting. A local warranty means you deal with an Australian support channel under Australian Consumer Law, instead of posting hardware overseas. Grey imports can also have the wrong regulatory approvals or power plugs, and may not be covered. Keep your invoice and serial number.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Ubiquiti gateway to use UniFi access points?

Not strictly. UniFi access points work with a UniFi gateway, a Cloud Key or a self-hosted controller. But the gateway console gives you the smoothest setup, plus integrated firewall rules, VLANs and client insights, so most people go with it.

Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it over Wi-Fi 6?

Only if you have, or plan to buy, Wi-Fi 7 clients, or if your area is congested. The 2.5GbE port and 6GHz band are the practical wins. If your devices are older, a quality Wi-Fi 6 AP with wired backhaul still performs very well.

Will my ISP's NBN speed be limited by a cheaper gateway?

It can be. A gigabit WAN gateway is fine for most plans, but when you enable threat inspection, throughput can fall noticeably. If you're on a faster plan or want inspection on, step up to a gateway with multi-gig WAN and more processing headroom.

Do I need PoE switches?

It's the cleanest way to power access points and cameras, with a single cable per device. If you only have one AP, a PoE injector is a fine budget option. If you plan to expand, buy a PoE switch with spare budget now.

Can I mix Ubiquiti with other networking brands?

Yes. Standard Ethernet and Wi-Fi interoperate fine, so a TP-Link switch can feed a UniFi AP. You'll just lose the single-dashboard management on the mixed parts, so keep the core of your setup within one ecosystem where you can.
