Which Tapo device do you actually need?

Most PC builders end up looking at Tapo for one of three jobs: keeping an eye on the house or workshop with a camera, controlling lights and gear with smart plugs and bulbs, or tracking what a rig and its peripherals pull from the wall. Tapo is TP-Link's smart home line, and the tiers differ in ways that matter more than the price tags suggest.

At the entry level you have basic smart plugs like the P100, simple Wi-Fi bulbs and 1080p indoor cameras like the C100 series. A basic plug is just a relay and a Wi-Fi chip. It switches mains on and off with a schedule, and that's it. Entry cameras use a small sensor with fixed or basic pan/tilt movement and infrared night vision, which gives a black and white image after dark.

The sweet spot is where the engineering gets more interesting. The P110 adds a current-sensing circuit, so you get real energy usage data instead of just an on/off toggle. Cameras in the C210 and C220 range move to 3MP or 2K sensors, which matters because extra pixels let you identify a face or a number plate rather than just see a shape. H.264 or H.265 compression decides how much of that detail survives on a microSD card.

At the enthusiast end you're looking at outdoor cameras like the C320WS or the pan/tilt C500 and C520WS style models, plus doorbells, hubs and multi-sensor setups. Higher-end units add colour night vision using a larger aperture lens and a more sensitive sensor, weatherproofing and spotlights. Diminishing returns hit fast with resolution. Beyond 2K, a typical home Wi-Fi link just gets congested, and a good low-light sensor beats more megapixels every time.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The biggest compatibility trap is the radio. Most Tapo devices connect on 2.4GHz only, so if your networking setup merges bands under one SSID, pairing can fail. Temporarily disable the 5GHz band or use the app's guidance during setup. A TP-Link Deco or Archer router makes this the smoothest, since it's the same ecosystem, but any decent dual-band router works.

If you're running a home lab, check for ONVIF and RTSP support on the camera model. Many Tapo cameras expose a local stream, so you can feed footage into a NAS or a recording box rather than paying for cloud storage. Tapo Care is the optional cloud subscription, and local microSD recording works fine without it, though you lose off-site backup if someone walks off with the camera.

For power monitoring, the P110 is the model most builders want. It reports watts and daily or monthly usage, which is handy for seeing how a gaming PC behaves at idle versus under load. It's not a lab-grade meter, so treat the numbers as a good estimate rather than gospel. If you're sizing a power supply, the wall-draw figure helps you sanity-check headroom, and it shows whether an efficient unit from a line like Seasonic Focus or Corsair RMx is earning its keep at your typical load.

Smart plugs and PCs need some care though. Cutting power to a running desktop is a great way to corrupt a drive. Use plugs for monitors, speakers, lamps, chargers and network gear, and let the OS shut the PC down properly. Matter support is spreading across newer smart home hardware, but check the specific model listing rather than assuming it.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with load ratings. Australian smart plugs are typically rated to 10A, which is plenty for monitors and peripherals, but a heavy workstation with a high-end graphics card and a big CPU can pull serious current. If you want to switch something that large, check the rating and consider whether it's worth it. A bulky plug can also block an adjacent socket on a power board, so look at the physical dimensions.

For cameras, check mounting and cabling. Most Tapo cameras use a USB power adapter, and the supplied cable is short. If you need a longer run to a shelf or eave, a quality extension from the cables and connectors range helps, but avoid thin cables over long distances because voltage drop causes random reboots. Outdoor models need a weatherproof route for the cable, and indoor-rated units should stay indoors.

Think about Wi-Fi signal where the camera will actually sit. A garage or backyard shed is often a dead zone, and a camera on a weak link gives choppy video. Test with your phone first. Also check microSD capacity limits for the specific model, since they vary, and use a high-endurance card because constant recording wears out cheap ones.

Heat is worth a thought too. A camera in a sealed cabinet or a sunny window will throttle or fail early. If you're monitoring a server cupboard or a build, pairing it with a temperature sensor and decent fans and cooling is more useful than just watching it cook. For a fully enclosed rig, a well-ventilated computer case matters more than any camera does. If you want a visual dashboard for your desk, a good monitor can show multiple camera feeds in a tidy grid.

Brands and local warranty

Tapo is TP-Link's brand, so you're dealing with one of the biggest networking names going. For the wider ecosystem, you'd look at TP-Link routers, switches and Deco mesh systems, plus alternatives like Ubiquiti UniFi for prosumer camera setups or Reolink and Eufy for cameras. Each has strengths, but Tapo's value is in app simplicity and price.

Buy from an Australian retailer so you get an Australian-spec product with the correct plug, voltage and firmware, plus local warranty coverage under Australian Consumer Law. Grey imports might have the wrong plug type or region-locked features, and warranty claims become a headache. Keep your invoice, because a faulty plug or camera is far simpler to sort locally than by shipping overseas.

Frequently asked questions

Do Tapo devices work with a 5GHz Wi-Fi network?

Most Tapo devices only use 2.4GHz for the connection. Your router can still run both bands, but during setup the device needs to see the 2.4GHz network. Once paired, it usually stays connected fine.

Can I record Tapo camera footage without a subscription?

Yes. Most cameras support local recording to a microSD card, and many also support RTSP or ONVIF for sending video to a NAS or recording software. Tapo Care is optional and adds cloud storage and smarter alerts.

Is the P110 accurate enough to measure my PC's power draw?

It's good for trends and rough numbers, such as comparing idle against gaming load. It isn't calibrated test equipment, so don't rely on it for precise efficiency testing, but it's well suited to everyday monitoring.

Is it safe to put my gaming PC on a smart plug?

It's fine for monitoring, but don't use it to cut power to a running machine. Always shut down through the OS first. Also check the plug's current rating against what your whole setup draws.

Do I need a hub?

Wi-Fi plugs, bulbs and cameras work without one. A hub becomes useful when you add lots of low-power sensors, because those use a different radio and the hub bridges them to your network.
