Collection: White Network Cables

Which white network cable do you actually need?

Most PC builders pick a white network cable for the colour match and then wonder why the spec list has Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat8 on it. The colour is the easy part. What changes between tiers is how much crosstalk and noise the cable can reject at higher signalling frequencies. Cat5e is rated to 100 MHz and handles gigabit and 2.5GbE comfortably over typical home runs. Cat6 lifts that to 250 MHz and usually adds a spline or tighter twisting to separate the pairs. Cat6a goes to 500 MHz with a thicker jacket and better pair isolation, which is what lets 10GBASE-T run the full 100 metres. Cat8 goes to 2000 MHz, but it is built for short 25G and 40G runs in data centres, not for a bedroom.

For most people, the sweet spot is Cat6 for general use or Cat6a if you want to be covered for 10GbE. Entry-level Cat5e is fine for a console, a smart TV or a gigabit internet plan. Cat8 is where diminishing returns hit hard. Your router, your NIC and your ISP plan will be the bottleneck long before the cable is.

Upgrading and technical nuances

Most current boards ship with 2.5GbE as standard, and some enthusiast Motherboards include 5GbE or 10GbE. That makes the cable matter a bit more than it used to. Cat5e can carry 2.5GbE, but a cheap, badly terminated one is often what causes dropped link speeds or random renegotiation to 1Gbps. If your switch shows a 1000 Mbps link when you expected 2500, swap the cable before blaming the hardware.

Shielding is the next thing to understand. UTP has no shield and is perfectly fine for short home runs. F/UTP or S/FTP adds foil or braided shielding that cuts alien crosstalk and interference, which helps when you bundle cables behind a desk next to power leads. The catch is that shielding only works if the connectors and ports are grounded properly. A shielded cable in an unshielded setup gains you very little and is stiffer to route.

Conductor material is the big trap. Look for solid or stranded bare copper. Copper-clad aluminium (CCA) cables are cheaper, but they have higher resistance, are more brittle and cope poorly with PoE devices like cameras and access points. Flat white cables look tidy and are great for sneaking under doors, but many are only Cat6 at best and have looser pair isolation. For a permanent run, a round cable with proper twisting is the safer pick.

For benchmarks, look at Ugreen, Cable Matters and StarTech.com for mainstream white patch cables, Belkin for a more premium, retail-polished option, and Ubiquiti or TP-Link patch cables if you are matching a UniFi or Omada setup. Check the product page for the actual category rating and the conductor material, because the colour alone tells you nothing.

Practical things to check before buying

Length comes first. Ethernet's 100 metre limit covers the entire channel including patch leads, but for a desktop to a nearby switch you want a lead that is slightly longer than the path, not coiled up like a garden hose. Excess cable in tight spaces adds clutter and heat, and a sharp bend can break the pair geometry. Most Cat6a cables want a bend radius of around four times the cable diameter.

Next is connector boot size. Snagless boots are great, but a bulky boot can foul a tightly packed switch or a slim motherboard I/O panel. Slim boots, often around 3.5 to 4 mm cable diameter, suit crowded racks and small form factor builds. They are usually thinner Cat6 or Cat6a with a lower shield rating, so check the spec before assuming.

For white builds, the jacket matters too. Cheap white PVC can yellow over time, especially near heat or in direct sun, and it picks up scuffs and dust. Look for a jacket described as LSZH if it will be inside a wall cavity or somewhere with poor ventilation, though for desktop use PVC is fine. If you are running behind a case with a white panel, the cable exit point and routing cutouts in your Computer Cases matter more than the colour. Most cases have no dedicated Ethernet pass-through, so route it out the back with the rest of your cabling.

Finally, check the plug itself. Gold plating is mostly about corrosion resistance and has no effect on speed, so do not pay extra for it. A moulded plug with proper strain relief matters more, because the latch tab is the first thing to snap. If you are connecting to a 2.5G or 10G NIC, confirm the other end of the link is rated for the same speed. A great cable cannot save a 1G switch port.

If you are sorting out the rest of your connectivity at the same time, the Cables & Connectors and Networking collections cover switches, adapters and the other odds and ends. If you are buying a whole system, a pre-built from Computers will normally include its own Ethernet port spec on the product page.

Brands and local warranty

Reputable names include Ugreen, Cable Matters, StarTech.com, Belkin, Vention and Orico for general patch leads, plus TP-Link and Ubiquiti for network ecosystem matching. For bulk cable and in-wall runs, look for brands that clearly state conductor material and test certification rather than vague "high speed" claims.

Genuine Australian warranty matters more than people expect, even for a cable. A faulty lead can cost you hours of troubleshooting before you suspect it, and an Australian supplier will exchange it without you having to ship it overseas. Local stock also means you are buying cables tested and sold for Australian conditions, and you avoid the grey-import lottery where specs are sometimes inflated.

Frequently asked questions

Will a white Cat6 cable be slower than a black one?

No. Jacket colour has nothing to do with performance. Speed comes from the category rating, conductor quality, shielding and termination, so a well-made white Cat6 lead performs identically to a black Cat6 from the same maker.

Do I need Cat8 for a gaming PC?

No. Games need low latency and stable packet delivery, not extreme bandwidth. Cat6 or Cat6a already handles 2.5GbE and 10GbE, and Cat8 only pays off in very short, high-speed data centre style links.

Is Cat5e enough for 2.5GbE?

Generally yes, since 2.5GBASE-T is designed to run over Cat5e up to 100 metres. In practice, a decent Cat6 costs about the same, gives you more headroom and is less likely to cause link negotiation problems.

Are flat white Ethernet cables any good?

They are fine for short, tidy runs, especially under carpets or doors. For long permanent runs or PoE devices, a round cable with proper twisted pairs and pure copper conductors is a safer choice.

Does a shielded cable make a difference at home?

Only in noisy environments, such as when cables run alongside power leads or in dense bundles. Otherwise a decent UTP cable will perform the same, and it is easier to route.
