Which 8ware option do you actually need?

Most PC builders treat cables and connectivity gear as an afterthought, then spend a weekend chasing a flickering display or a drive that negotiates at half speed. 8ware is a go-to name in Australia for exactly this layer of a build: display cables, USB and adapter gear, network leads and the small accessories that hold a system together. The real choice is picking the right tier for the signal you are moving.

At entry level, you are buying cables rated for older bandwidth, such as High Speed HDMI, basic USB 2.0 or 3.0 leads, and Cat5e or plain Cat6 patch cables. That is fine for a 1080p 60Hz office monitor, a keyboard hub or a gigabit network. The sweet spot is a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI lead (48Gbps), a DisplayPort lead matched to your monitor's version, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 or USB4-rated USB-C lead, and Cat6a for networking. At the enthusiast end you are paying for tighter shielding, thicker conductors, active or optical designs for long runs, and full 40Gbps or higher data rates.

Diminishing returns hit fast. A digital signal either arrives intact or it does not, so a dearer cable will not make a picture sharper. What changes under the hood is bandwidth headroom, conductor gauge (lower AWG means thicker copper and less voltage drop on power-carrying cables), shielding quality against interference, and how tightly the connector is built. Pay for the spec you need and stop there.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The biggest trap is assuming a cable is "just a cable". A 1440p 240Hz or 4K 144Hz Monitors setup can exceed what an older HDMI or DisplayPort lead carries, which shows up as capped refresh rates, dropped colour depth or random black screens. Check the monitor's port versions first, then your Graphics Cards / GPU outputs, then buy the lead that sits comfortably above both.

USB-C is the messiest area. The same connector can carry USB 2.0 speeds, 10Gbps, 20Gbps, USB4 at 40Gbps, DisplayPort Alt Mode or charging, depending on the cable's internals. Many cheap USB-C leads are charge-only or limited to USB 2.0 data, which will quietly throttle an external NVMe enclosure. If you are pairing one with a fast drive from the Solid State Drives (SSD) range, buy a lead rated for the enclosure's speed.

For networking, Cat6a handles 10Gbps to 100 metres with better crosstalk rejection than Cat6, which tops out at 10Gbps over only about 55 metres. Cat7 and Cat8 are mostly marketing in a home or small office. Cat8 only makes sense in short data-centre runs. Match the cable to your router or switch from the Networking range, such as a TP-Link Archer or Deco setup (see TP-Link). A 2.5GbE or 10GbE port on a modern Motherboards board is wasted on a tired Cat5e lead.

Be careful with copper-clad aluminium (CCA) conductors. They cost less but carry more resistance and are more brittle, which matters for power over Ethernet and any cable carrying current. Solid or stranded pure copper is the safer choice.

Practical things to check before clicking buy

Start with length. Passive HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 leads lose reliability as they get longer, and anything much past 2 to 3 metres at top bandwidth usually needs an active or fibre-optic design. Buy the shortest lead that reaches comfortably without strain.

Next, check connector size and clearance. Right-angle or low-profile connectors help in tight spots behind a monitor on a wall arm. Inside the build, measure the gap between your motherboard header and the case side panel, especially in compact Computer Cases where thick sleeved cables fight the glass panel. Bend radius matters too. Forcing a stiff cable into a tight turn stresses the connector and can cause intermittent faults.

For internal power and fan connections, treat cables as part of the power chain. Pair your Power Supplies with leads designed for that unit, and never mix modular cables between brands, because pinouts differ even when the plugs fit. If you need a spare SATA or fan lead, a generic one is fine. A 12V-2x6 GPU lead is not the place to cut corners. Use the one supplied with a quality ATX 3.0 or 3.1 unit from the ATX Power Supply range, and seat it fully with no sharp bend near the connector.

Cooling is another overlooked area. Fan extension leads, splitters and hubs are handy, but check the total amperage on a motherboard fan header before daisy-chaining several fans. The Fans, Heatsinks & Cooling and CPU Cooling ranges often list the fan's current draw, so add it up. Finally, if you are building a whole system around a new CPUs & Processors platform, Desktop Memory and board, browse Cables & Connectors at the same time so you are not waiting on a lead to finish the build.

Brands and local warranty

In this category, 8ware sits alongside names like Cable Matters, Belkin, Ugreen, StarTech and Club3D for connectivity, and TP-Link, Ubiquiti and Netgear for network hardware. Each has strengths, but the practical differences come down to certification, build consistency and how quickly a faulty unit gets sorted.

Local warranty matters more than most people think. A cable that fails after six months is annoying, but a dodgy dock or adapter that damages a port is a real problem. Buying through an Australian retailer means Australian Consumer Law applies, you deal with a local support team and you are not posting a $12 lead overseas for a refund. Keep your invoice, and check the warranty length listed on the product page, since terms vary between product types.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Ultra High Speed HDMI for gaming?

If your monitor or TV runs 4K at 120Hz or higher, or uses HDMI 2.1 features like VRR, yes. For 1080p or 1440p at 60 to 144Hz, a good High Speed lead usually works. Look for the certification label rather than trusting a number on the box.

Is a more expensive Ethernet cable faster?

Not beyond its rated category. Cat6a gives you real headroom for 10Gbps and tougher environments, but a gigabit connection will run the same on decent Cat5e or Cat6. Spend extra only if you have long runs, noisy environments or a multi-gig network.

Will any USB-C cable work for my external SSD?

No. Many USB-C leads only carry USB 2.0 data. Look for a lead explicitly rated for 10Gbps, 20Gbps or 40Gbps to match your enclosure, otherwise the drive will run far slower than advertised.

How long can a DisplayPort or HDMI cable be?

At high refresh rates and resolutions, passive leads are reliable to roughly 2 to 3 metres. Beyond that, choose an active or optical lead, and confirm it supports your resolution and refresh rate.

Does cable brand affect picture quality?

Not for digital signals. A compliant cable either carries the signal or it does not. Brand differences show up in durability, shielding, connector fit and warranty support, so buy for those reasons.
