Collection: Cat5e Network Cables

Which Cat5e network cable do you actually need?

Most PC builders treat a network cable as an afterthought, and that's fine until a dodgy one drops your ping or caps a gigabit link at 100 Mbps. The tiers in Cat5e Network Cables don't differ much in raw speed. They differ in conductor quality, construction and termination. Entry-level cables are usually unshielded twisted pair (UTP) with moulded plugs and basic PVC jackets. They pass gigabit fine over typical home runs because Cat5e is rated to 100 MHz and 1000BASE-T over 100 metres. The sweet spot adds pure bare copper conductors, snagless boots that protect the latch, and tighter pair twisting for better crosstalk rejection. Enthusiast-style cables add shielding (FTP or S/FTP), gold-plated contacts and braided jackets. Those mostly help in electrically noisy spots, such as next to a power board or a bundle of mains cables.

Diminishing returns hit quickly. Gigabit needs about 100 MHz of bandwidth, and Cat5e supplies exactly that. Paying more for gold plating or a fancy jacket won't lower latency or raise throughput, because Ethernet latency is dominated by your switch, router and ISP. What you are really buying is reliability: less crosstalk, less chance of a latch snapping off, and conductors that don't degrade. If you have a 2.5G port and a short run, Cat5e usually copes. If you're planning 5G or 10G, step up to Cat6 or Cat6a instead.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The biggest trap is copper-clad aluminium (CCA). It's cheaper than solid copper but has higher resistance, becomes brittle, and can fail gigabit negotiation on longer runs. It also performs poorly with Power over Ethernet (PoE) for cameras and access points. Look for "100% pure copper" or "bare copper" in the listing. Conductor gauge matters as well: 24 AWG is the usual Cat5e standard, and some very thin 28 AWG flat cables trade performance for flexibility.

Solid versus stranded is the other split. Solid-core cable suits in-wall runs and patch panels because it holds termination well, but it fatigues if bent repeatedly. Stranded cable is what you want for patch leads between a PC and wall plate, since it handles flexing. Flat cables look tidy under carpet or doors, but they usually lack the twist consistency of round cable, so keep them short.

On modern platforms, many AM5 and LGA1851 boards ship with 2.5GbE as standard, and a few premium boards have 5G or 10G. Cat5e does carry 2.5GBASE-T at full distance in most cases, which is why it's still sensible for upgrading a gigabit home to 2.5G without rewiring. Anything beyond that is hit and miss, so pick Cat6 or Cat6a for new in-wall runs. Check the spec sheet on your Motherboards before assuming what the port can do. For a switch or router that can use that speed, the Networking range is the place to start, and TP-Link offers a wide spread of gigabit and multi-gig gear.

For benchmark names, look at Ugreen, Cable Matters, StarTech.com and Belkin for reliable patch leads. Alogic and Vention are also widely stocked locally. Plain UTP from those families covers most desktops. For shielded options, look for S/FTP patch leads from the same brands.

Practical things to check before buying

Length is the first thing. Measure the actual route, including the bend around the desk and behind the case, then add about 20 per cent. Anything beyond 100 metres, including both patch leads and in-wall cable, is outside the Ethernet standard. Overly long leads coiled behind a desk can also pick up interference, so don't buy a 20 metre cable "just in case".

Check the connector. A snagless boot makes it much easier to pull the cable out of a crowded switch, but oversized boots can foul on stacked ports or on a tight rear I/O panel. Inside a small build, look at how close the LAN port sits to your GPU or the case wall. If you have a compact chassis, browse Computer Cases with rear cable clearance in mind. A slim-boot lead is often better in those builds.

Shielding only works if it's grounded properly. A shielded cable plugged into unshielded ports gives you very little. Use it where there's genuine interference, like running alongside power cables, otherwise standard UTP is fine. Keep network cables apart from mains wiring where possible, and cross them at right angles if they must meet.

PoE devices are another gotcha. For cameras or access points, use solid pure copper and avoid CCA entirely, because heat and voltage drop get worse over distance. If you're building a home setup with a mix of gear, Cables & Connectors has related leads and adapters worth browsing alongside your network order. And if your PC feels slow online, check the cable and port before you spend on CPUs & Processors or Graphics Cards / GPU, because a bad link is a much cheaper fix.

Finally, test after install. Check that the link negotiates at 1 Gbps or 2.5 Gbps in your OS network adapter status. If it sits at 100 Mbps, suspect a damaged cable, a bad crimp, or a CCA lead.

Brands and local warranty

For patch leads, Ugreen, Cable Matters, StarTech.com, Belkin and Alogic are all reputable, and TP-Link is a safe pick if you want the cable to match your router or switch. Cheap unbranded leads often skip testing, use CCA, or lack the rated certification. Because cables are inexpensive, people assume warranty doesn't matter, but it does if you're cabling a house, an office or a rack. A reputable Australian seller means a faulty batch gets replaced instead of being a hassle to return overseas. Local support also helps if a cable has caused intermittent dropouts and you need someone to actually troubleshoot it. Keep your invoice, particularly for in-wall installs, since under Australian Consumer Law you're entitled to a remedy when goods aren't of acceptable quality.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cat5e fast enough for gaming?

Yes. Gaming traffic uses very little bandwidth, and latency is determined by your ISP and router. A decent Cat5e lead will perform identically to Cat6 at gigabit speeds, and far better than Wi-Fi for stability.

Can Cat5e handle 2.5G Ethernet?

Usually, yes. The 2.5GBASE-T standard was designed to run over existing Cat5e up to 100 metres. A poor-quality or damaged cable might still struggle, so test the negotiated link speed.

What's the difference between Cat5e and Cat6?

Cat6 is rated to 250 MHz with tighter twisting and often a spline separating pairs, which reduces crosstalk. That matters for 5G and 10G over longer distances. For gigabit and most 2.5G home use, Cat5e is perfectly capable.

Do I need shielded Cat5e?

Only in noisy electrical environments or when running alongside power cables. Shielding must be grounded correctly to help, so for a typical home desk, good unshielded copper cable is fine.

How do I spot a bad network cable?

Check whether the link drops to 100 Mbps, disconnects intermittently, or shows packet loss. Swap in a known-good cable to confirm. If the cable feels unusually light or the cut end looks silver rather than copper, it may be CCA.
