Collection: Wireless Router

Which wireless router do you actually need?

Most PC builders spend weeks agonising over GPU and RAM choices, then plug a ten-year-old ISP modem into a brand new rig and wonder why their game lobbies feel rough. A wireless router is the part that decides whether your build's network hardware gets used properly, so it deserves a proper look.

Entry-tier routers are typically Wi-Fi 6 dual-band units with gigabit ports, such as the TP-Link Archer AX series. They use 2x2 radios and 80MHz channels, which is plenty for a 100 or 250Mbps NBN plan and a handful of devices. The trade-off is a modest CPU and little RAM, so once you stack 30 or more clients, or enable heavy QoS, throughput drops and latency spikes.

The sweet spot today is Wi-Fi 7 tri-band with a 2.5GbE WAN port. You get the 6GHz band, 320MHz channels, 4096-QAM and Multi-Link Operation, which lets a compatible device use two bands at once. Real-world gains show up as lower and steadier latency rather than headline speed, because MLO can shift traffic if one band gets congested. Examples include the TP-Link Archer BE series and ASUS RT-BE and ZenWiFi lines.

Enthusiast routers like the ASUS ROG Rapture range or Netgear Nighthawk flagships add quad-core CPUs, 10GbE ports, link aggregation, and better thermals and antennas. Diminishing returns hit hard here. Unless you have a 2Gbps NBN plan, a NAS moving big files, or a proper multi-gig home lab, you are paying for headroom you won't touch.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The first thing to understand is that Wi-Fi speed ratings are combined theoretical figures across all bands. A "BE19000" label doesn't mean any single device sees 19Gbps. Your PC will connect on one band (or two with MLO) at its own link rate. A 2x2 client on 160MHz tops out around 2.4Gbps in ideal conditions, and a 6GHz 320MHz link can roughly double that. Real throughput is usually 50 to 60 percent of the link rate.

Your client hardware matters as much as the router. Many current Motherboards on AM5 and LGA1851 ship with Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 modules, commonly Intel BE200 or MediaTek equivalents. If yours has an older Wi-Fi 6 card, a Wi-Fi 7 router still helps with congestion, but you won't see 6GHz or MLO. Swapping the M.2 Wi-Fi card is cheap, though you need to reconnect the antenna leads properly.

For a desktop, I'd still run Ethernet where possible. Wired gaming gives lower jitter, and a 2.5GbE port on the router pairs nicely with the 2.5GbE controller on most mid-range boards. Grab decent Cat6 or Cat6a from Cables & Connectors, because ancient flat patch leads can cause negotiation drops. Browse the wider Networking range if you also need switches or access points.

Mesh versus single router is the other big call. A single high-end unit is better in a small home or apartment, since every wireless hop in a mesh costs capacity. For larger or multi-storey homes, a mesh like TP-Link Deco or ASUS ZenWiFi with a wired Ethernet backhaul is far better than a single router shouting through brick walls. Wireless backhaul works but halves effective bandwidth on a shared radio unless there is a dedicated backhaul band.

Firmware and security are also part of the spec. Look for ongoing update support, WPA3, a decent guest network, and VPN client support if you use one. Ubiquiti UniFi suits people who want a prosumer, controller-based setup, but it takes more configuration.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with your NBN or ISP gear. If your plan is 500Mbps or faster, you want a router with a 2.5GbE WAN port, otherwise a gigabit WAN port becomes your ceiling. Check your modem too. If your provider's modem has built-in Wi-Fi, set it to bridge or modem-only mode, or you get double NAT, which can mess with console NAT types and port forwarding.

Placement matters more than people think. A router tucked inside a metal-backed cabinet or behind a TV loses range quickly. Put it up high and central, and keep it away from microwaves and thick masonry. 6GHz has the least range through walls, so it works best in the same room or the next one over.

Thermals count too. Powerful routers run warm, and a unit crammed into a media cabinet will throttle or crash over time. Leave airflow around it. If your gaming PC sits in a closed desk compartment, make sure your Computer Cases airflow and Fans, Heatsinks & Cooling are sorted so the heat from your rig isn't cooking the router sitting next to it.

Power is simple, but check the adapter. Many high-end routers use a 12V brick with a fairly high current draw, and you want it plugged into a surge-protected board or the same protected circuit as your PC. If your build runs a quality unit from Power Supplies, consider a UPS to keep the modem and router alive during brownouts.

Finally, check the port layout. Multiple 2.5GbE LAN ports are more useful than a single 10GbE port for most people. Count how many wired devices you have, such as PC, console, NAS, and a streaming box, and check you aren't forced to add a switch immediately.

Brands and local warranty

The major names are TP-Link, ASUS, Netgear, and Ubiquiti, with Linksys and D-Link still around in the budget and mid-tier. TP-Link tends to deliver strong value, particularly with Archer and Deco. ASUS is popular with gamers for its feature-rich firmware and AiMesh. Netgear Nighthawk and Orbi are well built but usually priced higher.

Buying from a proper Australian retailer matters. Routers are always-on devices, so failure over time is more likely than for a static component, and Australian Consumer Law guarantees remedies when a product fails within a reasonable time. Grey imports can have the wrong power plug, firmware regions, or restricted channels. Local stock is built for Australian radio regulations, and warranty claims go through local support rather than overseas shipping.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Wi-Fi 7 for my gaming PC?

Not strictly, but it's the sensible buy today. The main benefits are lower latency under load and access to wide 6GHz channels. If your PC or phone doesn't support Wi-Fi 7, you still benefit from the router's stronger hardware and future compatibility.

Is a wireless router better than Ethernet for gaming?

No. Ethernet has lower jitter and doesn't suffer from interference. A good Wi-Fi 7 link on 6GHz in the same room can get close, but wired is still the benchmark for competitive play.

Will a new router make my internet faster?

Only if the router was your bottleneck. It can't exceed your NBN plan speed, but it can fix poor Wi-Fi coverage, congestion, and a slow WAN port that was capping fast plans.

Can I use my old router as an access point?

Usually yes, if the firmware supports AP mode. Connect it by Ethernet to the main router, disable its DHCP server, and give it a separate or matching SSID. It's a cheap way to fix a dead spot.

Should I buy a mesh system or a single router?

For a small home, a single quality router is better. For multiple floors or thick walls, go mesh with a wired backhaul if you can, since that avoids the capacity loss of wireless hops.
