Collection: Wireless Mouse

Which wireless mouse do you actually need?

Most PC builders overspend on sensor numbers and underspend on shape, weight and wireless implementation, which are the things you feel every minute. An entry-level wireless mouse, usually in the Logitech M-series or Microsoft range, uses a basic optical sensor, a Bluetooth LE link and a single AA or AAA cell. That is fine for browsing, spreadsheets and editing, but Bluetooth typically runs a higher and less consistent report interval than a proprietary 2.4GHz dongle, so fast flicks can feel slightly lagged.

The sweet spot is where a proper 2.4GHz link, a quality sensor and a sensible weight meet. Look for a PixArt PAW3395 class sensor or Logitech's HERO line, a weight between 55 and 70 grams, PTFE skates and a rechargeable cell. The Logitech G305 is the budget entry to this tier, while the Razer DeathAdder V3 Pro and Logitech G502 X Lightspeed are good examples further up. For productivity, the Logitech MX Master series is the benchmark for ergonomics and scroll wheel quality.

Enthusiast mice, like the Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2 or Razer Viper V3 Pro, push weight below 55 grams and add 4000 to 8000Hz polling. At 1000Hz the mouse reports every 1ms, while 8000Hz reports every 0.125ms. That smooths cursor motion at very high frame rates, but it also loads a CPU core with more interrupts. Honestly, the gains are subtle unless you are running a high refresh rate display and chasing competitive FPS. Anything above 3200 DPI is mostly marketing, because tracking consistency and lift-off distance matter more than the headline number.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The biggest architectural split is how the mouse talks to your PC. Bluetooth LE is convenient and good for laptops and multi-device desks, but it trades latency and polling headroom for power savings. Proprietary 2.4GHz dongles, like Logitech Lightspeed, Razer HyperSpeed and Corsair Slipstream, use a dedicated radio protocol with frequency hopping, which is why they hold a steady 1ms response. Many current mice offer both, so you can game on the dongle and switch to Bluetooth for a tablet.

Switch type is the next thing that changes under the hood. Mechanical microswitches can develop double-click faults as the leaf spring fatigues. Optical switches, found in newer Razer, Logitech and SteelSeries models, register a click by interrupting a light beam, so there is no contact bounce and no oxidation. They usually last longer, though the click feel is a little lighter and more uniform.

Sensor quality shows up in how it behaves, not in its spec sheet. A good flagship sensor keeps accurate tracking at high speed without spin-out, smoothing or acceleration. If you run a 240Hz or faster panel, a decent monitor and a capable graphics card let you benefit from a faster report rate. A modern CPU will handle 4000Hz polling easily, but 8000Hz can show up as extra load on older or weaker chips.

Battery life depends heavily on polling rate and RGB. A mouse rated for 70 hours at 1000Hz may only manage 15 to 20 hours at 8000Hz. Charging docks and magnetic pucks avoid the cable-swap routine, but they usually cost extra.

Practical things to check before buying

Shape and grip come first. Measure your hand from wrist crease to middle fingertip and match it to the mouse length. A 120mm mouse suits a claw or fingertip grip on smaller hands, while palm grippers with large hands tend to prefer 125mm or more. A mouse that is too small causes cramping no matter how good the sensor is.

Next, think about the receiver. 2.4GHz dongles are sensitive to interference from USB 3.0 ports, external SSD enclosures and busy Wi-Fi. If you notice stutter, use the supplied extension cable or a short USB extension from Cables & Connectors to move the dongle closer to the mouse pad. Plugging it into a rear I/O port on your motherboard is usually more stable than a front-panel header, though a good computer case with a well-shielded top-mounted USB port can work well too.

Your surface matters. Glass tops and highly reflective desks confuse optical sensors, and a cloth pad with consistent texture is generally best. Check how thick the PTFE skates are as well, because thin ones wear out in a year or so of heavy use.

Finally, check the software. Some mice need a vendor app like Logitech G HUB or Razer Synapse for onboard profile storage, and a few are fully configurable via a web interface. If you dislike background software, pick a model with onboard memory so your DPI and button mapping stay saved. A solid home network helps if you use a multi-device setup, so a good Networking range, including TP-Link routers, can keep the 2.4GHz band less congested. If you are after a complete setup, our Computers range makes it easy to pair a mouse with a ready-to-go system.

Brands and local warranty

Logitech is the safest all-rounder, with strong Australian distribution and a wide range from the budget G305 to the MX Master. Razer makes polished gaming mice with excellent sensors and optical switches. SteelSeries, Corsair and Glorious cover the mid-range well, and Pulsar and Lamzu have a following among enthusiasts who want ultralight shells. Microsoft still makes dependable, simple office mice.

Warranty matters more than most buyers think, because wireless mice are consumables. Switches wear, batteries degrade and dongles die. Under Australian Consumer Law, products must be of acceptable quality regardless of what the box says, but buying through an authorised Australian retailer means the claim is handled locally. Grey imports can mean waiting weeks for an overseas return, or a flat refusal.

Frequently asked questions

Is a wireless mouse slower than a wired one?

Not in any way you will notice on a good 2.4GHz connection. Modern dongle-based mice report at 1ms or better, matching wired mice in practice. Bluetooth is a different story, with higher and less consistent latency, so use it for office work rather than competitive play.

Do I need 8000Hz polling?

Probably not. It makes cursor movement a little smoother on very high refresh rate displays, but it increases CPU load and cuts battery life sharply. 1000Hz is fine for most people, and 4000Hz is a sensible upper step.

How much DPI is enough?

Most players are comfortable between 400 and 1600 DPI. Higher figures exist mainly for marketing. Pay more attention to sensor consistency and whether the mouse tracks cleanly at speed.

Will a wireless mouse work with my PC without drivers?

Yes. Nearly all work as standard HID devices straight out of the box. You only need vendor software for DPI changes, button remapping, RGB and firmware updates.

How long should the battery last?

Expect around 40 to 90 hours for a rechargeable gaming mouse at 1000Hz with lighting off, and several months to a year for an AA-powered office mouse. Higher polling rates and RGB cut that figure significantly.
