Collection: DisplayPort Cables & Adapters

Direction matters more than people expect. A DP to HDMI adapter converts one way only, so it will not run an HDMI source into a DisplayPort monitor, and swapping the ends changes nothing. Passive converters lean on the graphics card to output HDMI signalling; active ones do the work themselves and are the safer pick when the card is fussy. We carry straight DP cables plus mini-DP and USB-C to DP adapters from Astrotek, 8ware and MBEAT. Also worth a look: our HDMI cables and the wider cables and connectors range. Which DisplayPort cable or adapter do you actually need?

Most PC builders treat a DisplayPort cable as an afterthought, then wonder why their new high refresh rate Monitors won't hit its advertised spec. The difference between tiers isn't copper quality in the way people imagine. It's the link rate the cable is certified to carry, and how well it holds signal integrity at that rate.

Entry-tier cables are typically certified DP 1.2 or basic DP 1.4 (HBR3, 32.4Gbps raw, roughly 25.9Gbps usable). That's fine for 1080p at 240Hz or 1440p at 165Hz, and with Display Stream Compression it stretches to 4K at 144Hz. Sweet-spot cables are VESA-certified DP 1.4 or DP40, which covers UHBR10 at 40Gbps raw. Enthusiast cables are DP80 certified for UHBR20, 80Gbps raw, built for uncompressed 4K at very high refresh rates, or 8K and dual-4K setups.

Diminishing returns hit quickly. UHBR20 only matters if both your GPU output and your display support it. Otherwise the link negotiates down to the lowest common speed and you've paid extra for headroom nobody uses. A 1440p or 4K panel up to about 240Hz is well served by a certified DP 1.4 or DP40 cable. Spend more only when the monitor spec sheet lists UHBR13.5 or UHBR20 and you want to avoid DSC.

Upgrading and technical nuances

DSC is the big nuance. It's visually lossless in most cases, but it can complicate multi-monitor setups, limit some driver features, and occasionally add a blank-out delay when switching resolutions or alt-tabbing out of fullscreen games. A higher-bandwidth cable lets the link run uncompressed where the hardware supports it, so everything behaves more predictably.

Platform generation matters. Current Graphics Cards / GPU offer DisplayPort 2.1 on some models and DP 1.4a on others, so check the actual output spec for your card rather than assuming. Many Motherboards on AM5 and LGA1851 expose DisplayPort or HDMI for integrated graphics, and these are often capped at DP 1.4 speeds. If you're running a 4K high-refresh panel from an iGPU, the motherboard port might be the bottleneck, not the cable.

Adapters are where most compatibility traps live. A passive DisplayPort to HDMI adapter relies on the source supporting dual-mode DP++, which nearly every modern GPU does. But passive adapters usually top out at HDMI 1.4 or 2.0 levels. For 4K120 over HDMI 2.1 from a DisplayPort source, you need an active converter with a capable chip, and even then variable refresh rate support is hit and miss. If your monitor has a DisplayPort input, use it. DisplayPort to DVI-D dual-link or VGA also needs an active adapter. USB-C to DisplayPort cables depend on DP Alt Mode support on the laptop or GPU port, so a USB-C port that only charges won't output video.

For brands to look at: Cable Matters and Club 3D both offer VESA-certified DP80 cables, Alogic and Ugreen cover the sweet spot well, and StarTech.com is the go-to for niche active adapters and MST hubs. For a broader range of leads and video accessories, browse Cables & Connectors.

Practical things to check before buying

Length is the first gotcha. Passive DP80 cables are reliable around 1 to 1.5 metres, and signal integrity drops off quickly beyond that. For a longer run to a wall-mounted display or a projector, look at active or fibre optic DisplayPort cables. Fibre cables are directional, so make sure the source end is plugged into the GPU, and don't kink them tightly.

Connector fit matters too. Some DisplayPort connectors have a latch, and cheap plugs can be loose, which causes random black screens. Full-size ports on GPUs sit close together, so a chunky overmoulded plug can foul an adjacent cable. If you're stacking three monitors, slimmer plugs help. Behind the motherboard tray in a tight Computer Cases layout, a very stiff cable with a thick shield can resist bending near the GPU bracket, so check the bend radius and leave a few centimetres of slack.

Check the certified label. VESA's certification logo and the cable's printed speed class (DP40, DP80) tell you more than "8K support" on the box. Unbranded cables often claim DP 2.1 with no certification, and an uncertified one may only work at lower rates, producing sparkles, dropouts or flickering at high refresh rates.

If you're buying a pre-built or Computers bundle, check which ports the system uses. Plugging into the motherboard instead of the GPU is a classic mistake that leaves the dedicated graphics card unused.

Brands and local warranty

Reputable names to look for include Cable Matters, Club 3D, Alogic, Ugreen, StarTech.com and Belkin. Gaming monitor makers such as ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI often ship a decent cable in the box, and it's worth trying that first before buying a replacement. Alogic is an Australian brand, which can make support simpler.

Local warranty matters more than it sounds. Cables are cheap, but a faulty one is miserable to diagnose, because intermittent signal drops look like a dying GPU or monitor. Buying through an Australian retailer means you can return it under Australian Consumer Law guarantees without posting it overseas and waiting weeks. For active adapters and fibre cables, which cost more, a local warranty and a straightforward return path is well worth having.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a DP80 cable for 4K 144Hz?

No. A certified DP 1.4 or DP40 cable handles 4K at 144Hz, using DSC if required. DP80 only pays off if your GPU and monitor both support UHBR20 and you want a higher refresh rate without compression.

Is DisplayPort better than HDMI for gaming monitors?

On most PC monitors, yes. DisplayPort has long supported high refresh rates and adaptive sync reliably. HDMI 2.1 is closer now, but if the monitor and GPU both have DisplayPort, it's usually the more predictable option.

Will a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter support 4K 120Hz?

Only if it's an active adapter built for HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, and even then VRR and HDR may not work. Passive adapters generally top out lower. If you need 4K120 on a TV, check the adapter's specifications carefully.

Why does my monitor keep flickering or going black?

It's often a marginal cable, a loose plug, or an uncertified cable running at a link rate it can't sustain. Try a certified cable, reseat both ends, and drop the refresh rate to see if it clears. Also check that your GPU driver and monitor firmware are up to date.

How long can a DisplayPort cable be?

Passive high-bandwidth cables are best kept under about two metres. Beyond that, use an active or fibre optic cable designed for the resolution and refresh rate you want to run.
