Which Deepcool CPU cooler do you actually need?

Most PC builders overspend on cooling or undersize it, and the difference comes down to heatpipe count, fin area and fan design rather than the badge on the box. Entry-level Deepcool coolers like the AG400 and the AK400 use a single tower with four heatpipes and a 120mm fan. That is enough to hold a Ryzen 5 or Core Ultra 5 near its boost clocks in a case with decent airflow. The sweet spot is the AK620 and Assassin IV class: dual towers, six or seven heatpipes, and either two fans or a larger offset fan. The extra fin area and heat spreading lets a Ryzen 7 or Core Ultra 7 sustain all-core loads without the fan screaming.

Enthusiast territory is the 360mm AIO range, such as the LS720 and LT720, or the Mystique 360 with its LCD. An AIO moves heat away from the socket to a radiator with far more surface area, so it handles short, sharp power spikes from high-end chips better. Diminishing returns hit hard here. Going from an AK400 to an AK620 might buy you 8 to 12 degrees under sustained load. Going from an AK620 to a 360mm AIO often buys only a few more degrees, and you pay for it in pump noise, a failure point and more complicated installation. Pick your tier by the chip's sustained wattage, not its price.

Upgrading and technical nuances

Air coolers and AIOs behave differently under load. A dual-tower such as the AK620 has a big thermal mass, so it absorbs a sudden boost spike and ramps the fan gently. A 240mm or 360mm AIO has lower thermal mass at the block but far more radiator area, so it wins in long all-core renders and gaming sessions where heat builds steadily. Fan design matters too. The higher-end Deepcool fans use fluid dynamic bearings, which stay quieter over time than the cheaper sleeve designs on budget units, and the AK-series fan curves are tuned for static pressure through dense fins.

Socket compatibility needs a quick check. AM5 reuses the AM4-style mounting, and Intel's LGA1851 keeps the LGA1700 hole spacing. Most current Deepcool coolers therefore cover both, but confirm the listing mentions LGA1851 or LGA1700 and AM5 specifically. If you're upgrading from an older platform, don't assume your old bracket kit fits. Intel's rectangular socket can also flex under uneven mounting pressure, and Deepcool's mounting hardware is built to apply that pressure evenly, so tighten the screws gradually and in a cross pattern.

For a bigger picture of what suits your chip, see our CPUs & Processors range and match the cooler to the processor's rated power. Competitors like Thermalright's Peerless Assassin 120 and Arctic's Liquid Freezer III are the usual benchmarks. The Deepcool AK620 trades blows with the Peerless Assassin at similar pricing, while the Assassin IV sits above both for outright cooling. Practical things to check before buying

Start with cooler height against your case. The AK400 sits around 155mm and the AK620 around 160mm, while the Assassin IV is taller again. Check your Computer Cases spec sheet for the maximum CPU cooler height, and leave a few millimetres spare so the side panel closes without pressing on the fins. Compact builds in mATX or ITX cases often cap out below 150mm, which rules out the dual-tower options.

Next is memory clearance. Dual-tower coolers can overhang the first Desktop Memory slot. Many DDR5 kits are low profile, but tall heat-spreader RGB kits can foul the front fan. You can usually raise the fan on its clips, though that adds to the overall height, so factor it in. Also check the cooler against the top PCIe slot and the VRM heatsinks on your Motherboards, as some boards have tall heatsinks near the socket.

With AIOs, radiator placement matters. A top-mounted radiator can interfere with RAM or VRM heatsinks on some boards. A front-mounted one usually has more room and keeps the pump below the radiator's highest point, which reduces air gurgling. Check that the cables reach too. Fan and pump headers need to be on the board, and the AIO's USB header for LCD or software control takes up an internal USB 2.0 port. Cables & Connectors can cover splitters or extensions if you're short.

Don't forget thermal paste. Most Deepcool units ship with a pre-applied or included tube, which is perfectly fine. Finally, think about total heat. A hot GPU from our Graphics Cards / GPU range dumps warm air into the case, so make sure you have intake and exhaust fans, and that your Power Supplies or ATX Power Supply unit isn't blocking airflow. A good cooler in a stuffy case will still disappoint.

Brands and local warranty

Deepcool is a well-established name with a strong reputation for value. Other reputable brands in this space include Thermalright, Noctua, be quiet!, Arctic, Corsair and Cooler Master. Noctua sits at the premium end for noise and build quality, Thermalright competes on raw value, and Arctic is the go-to for quiet, affordable AIOs.

Buying through a local Australian retailer matters because warranty claims are handled under Australian Consumer Law. If an AIO pump fails or a fan bearing starts to rattle, you deal with a local support team rather than posting a part overseas and waiting weeks. Grey imports and marketplace sellers can leave you with no practical recourse. Keep your invoice and note the serial number, and you will be covered if the cooler fails prematurely.

Frequently asked questions

Is the stock cooler good enough, or do I need a Deepcool cooler?

Stock coolers handle lower-wattage chips, but they get loud and let the processor throttle sooner under sustained load. An AK400 is a cheap upgrade that cuts noise and temperatures noticeably, and it lets the chip hold boost clocks longer.

Will a Deepcool air cooler fit my AM5 or LGA1851 board?

Most current Deepcool models support both, as AM5 reuses the AM4-style mounting and LGA1851 shares LGA1700 hole spacing. Always confirm the exact socket list on the product page before buying.

Air cooler or AIO: which is better?

Neither is universally better. A quality dual-tower like the AK620 matches many 240mm AIOs, with fewer failure points and less noise at idle. An AIO makes more sense on hot, high-wattage chips, in cases with good radiator mounts, or when you want a cleaner look around the socket.

Do I need to replace the thermal paste?

Not usually. The included paste performs well, and swapping to a premium compound often makes only a degree or two of difference. Spend that money on case airflow first.

How long do Deepcool coolers last?

Air coolers can last many years, with the fan being the only wearing part and easily replaced. AIO pumps and coolant typically have a shorter practical lifespan, so check the warranty length before you buy.
