Collection: 10G Network Cables

Which 10G network cable do you actually need?

Most PC builders assume a 10G cable is just a regular Ethernet lead with a bigger number on the box. The differences are real, though, and they sit in the copper, the shielding and the twist rate of the pairs. Cat6 is rated to 250 MHz and only holds 10Gbps reliably to around 37 to 55 metres, depending on how much crosstalk is in the bundle. Cat6a doubles the bandwidth to 500 MHz, has tighter pair twists and usually a bulkier jacket, and holds 10Gbps for the full 100 metres. That is why Cat6a is the sweet spot for almost everyone.

Entry tier is decent Cat6 for short runs between a PC and a switch in the same room. Sweet spot is pure copper, S/FTP shielded Cat6a, where each pair has foil and the whole cable has a braid. Enthusiast tier is Cat8, rated to 2000 MHz for 25 and 40Gbps, but only to 30 metres. Diminishing returns hit hard here. Your NIC, switch and router almost certainly top out at 10Gbps, so Cat8 buys you headroom you can't use. The extra shielding also makes it stiff and harder to route behind a desk.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The biggest trap is copper-clad aluminium (CCA). It's cheaper, but it has higher resistance, runs hotter under PoE load and gets brittle at the crimp. Look for solid bare copper conductors on in-wall runs and pure copper stranded conductors on patch leads. Wire gauge matters too. Solid 23 AWG Cat6a is fine in walls, but slim 28 AWG patch cables have higher attenuation and are best kept under a few metres.

Cat7 is a quirk of the market. It isn't recognised for RJ45 termination, so a Cat7 lead with RJ45 plugs is really a well-shielded Cat6a cable with a bigger label. It's fine if it's well built, but don't pay extra for the name.

Your endpoints matter as much as the cable. Many motherboards now ship with 2.5GbE as standard, and 10GbE tends to appear on higher-end boards, so check the spec sheet. Otherwise you'll add a PCIe NIC based on chips like Marvell AQtion or Intel X550. These need at least a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot or a PCIe 4.0 x1 equivalent to hit full speed, and on modern platforms that slot often shares lanes with an M.2 socket. Check your board manual before assuming everything runs at once.

Storage is the other bottleneck. A real-world 10G link moves about 1.1GB/s, which a SATA drive can't sustain at around 550MB/s. If you're building a NAS or editing off a server, an NVMe drive from the Samsung 990 or Crucial T500 families, or a WD_BLACK, will actually use the link. Browse Solid State Drives (SSD) to match drive speed to your network. For switches and NICs, the Networking range covers the gear on the other end, including TP-Link options.

If your runs are short and inside a rack or between two machines, consider SFP+ instead. Direct attach copper (DAC) cables and fibre run cooler and draw less power than 10GBASE-T, which can push a transceiver or NIC past 40°C with ease. Latency is lower too, in the sub-microsecond range, compared with roughly 2 to 4 microseconds for BASE-T. Most home users won't notice that, but it's the right call for dense switch setups.

Practical things to check before buying

Measure the actual run, including the vertical drops and the detour around the case, and add about 15 percent slack. Shielded Cat6a has a bend radius of roughly four times its diameter, and tight kinks around a rear panel can cause real signal loss. Cat6a jackets are typically 6 to 8mm thick, so check that your cable gland, wall plate or the cable routing channel in your computer case can handle the girth. Cramming a thick shielded cable behind a tight motherboard tray is a common headache.

Look at the connector. Metal-shell RJ45 plugs with a proper ground path are what make shielded cable work. An S/FTP cable with plastic plugs, or one plugged into unshielded jacks, loses most of the benefit. Check boots too. Slim snagless boots help in crowded switch ports but can hide poor strain relief.

Heat is the sleeper issue. 10GBASE-T NICs run warm, so give them airflow. If your GPU covers the slot below it, leave a gap or add a case fan. Browse Fans, Heatsinks & Cooling if the NIC sits in a cramped lower slot, and check clearance against any large graphics card. Also check the cabling and connector options in Cables & Connectors if you need keystones, couplers or patch panels.

One Australian note: permanent in-wall cabling must be installed by an ACMA-registered cabler. Patch leads are fine for DIY, but fixed wiring through ceilings and walls is regulated.

Brands and local warranty

Reputable names in this space include StarTech.com, Cable Matters, Ugreen, Belkin, Amphenol and Panduit for structured cabling, plus Ubiquiti and TP-Link for switches and NICs. Big-brand patch leads are often just rebadged factory cables, so what matters is the stated spec: pure copper, a stated Cat6a rating and a proper shielding description.

Local warranty matters more than people think. A faulty cable is easy to swap, but a dodgy switch port or NIC under a grey import means shipping overseas or arguing with a seller who isn't there. Under the Australian Consumer Law, products must be of acceptable quality, and a local retailer or authorised distributor makes that enforceable. Keep your invoice and the box, and test new runs with a cable certifier or at least an iperf3 run before you hide them behind a wall.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Cat6 for 10Gbps?

Yes, over short runs. Cat6 will typically hold 10Gbps up to about 37 to 55 metres, depending on the environment and how many cables run together. For anything longer, or in-wall runs you can't easily replace, use Cat6a.

Is Cat8 worth buying for a home network?

Rarely. Cat8 is designed for 25 and 40Gbps between switches and servers within 30 metres. Home gear tops out at 10Gbps, so a good Cat6a cable will perform the same and is easier to route.

Will a 10G cable make my internet faster?

Only if your internet plan is faster than your current link. Most connections are well under 2.5Gbps, so the cable isn't the limit. 10G cabling pays off for local transfers to a NAS, a server or another PC.

Do I need shielded cable?

Shielded S/FTP is worth it near power cables, in bundled runs or in electrically noisy areas. For a short, tidy home run, UTP Cat6a also works. Just make sure the plugs and jacks match, as shielding only works if it's grounded properly.

Why is my 10G link only running at 1 or 2.5Gbps?

Usually it's a bad cable, CCA conductors, a poor termination or a slot running at reduced lanes. Check each part: swap in a known-good Cat6a lead, confirm the switch port supports 10G and look at the PCIe link speed of your NIC in your OS.
