Which type of phone case do you actually need?

Most PC builders I know spend weeks agonising over VRM phases and then slap a $5 gel case on a $1,800 phone. The same logic applies here: the spec differences matter, so let's talk about what changes between tiers.

Entry-level cases are a single layer of soft TPU, usually 1 to 1.5mm thick. TPU absorbs some impact by flexing, but it has no structural rigidity, so a hard corner hit transfers a lot of force into the phone's frame. Cheap TPU also yellows over time and goes tacky as plasticisers leach out. It's fine for scratch protection and not much else.

The sweet spot is a dual-layer or reinforced design: a rigid polycarbonate backplate bonded to a TPU bumper, with raised corners and a lip over the screen and camera. This is where the real protection happens. The rigid layer spreads impact load, the soft layer damps the rebound, and the corners are thickened because phones overwhelmingly land on corners. Spigen's Tough Armor and Ultra Hybrid ranges and UAG's Plasma and Monarch lines sit around here.

Enthusiast and rugged tiers add multi-layer construction, heavy corner dampening (D3O-style impact materials or air-cell geometry), port covers and sometimes a screen protector in the box. OtterBox's Defender and Commuter families are the benchmark. The trade-off is bulk and weight. Past a certain point you're adding 60 to 80 grams and a chunky profile for protection most people won't use. Diminishing returns kick in once you're past a certified 2-metre-plus drop rating unless you're on a worksite or in a boat.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The biggest modern change is magnetic charging. Current phones support Qi2 wireless charging, which relies on a magnet ring (the Magnetic Power Profile) to align the coil. Many cases claim "MagSafe compatible", but the quality of the magnet array varies a lot. Weak arrays let the phone drift off the charger, waste energy as heat and drop out mid-charge. Look for cases that explicitly list an embedded magnet ring, not just a thin metal plate. Genuine certified options from brands like Mous, Catalyst and Apple's own cases tend to hold properly.

Fit is the main compatibility trap. Cases are moulded to exact model dimensions, and base, Plus, Pro and Pro Max variants differ in camera bump size and button positions. Buy against the exact model number, not the generation. Camera control buttons and action buttons also change between releases, so a case that fits the previous model might block a new button.

Material matters in terms of heat as well. A thick case works like a poorly ventilated computer case: it traps heat. Sustained gaming or fast charging in a thick, insulating case pushes the SoC into thermal throttling sooner. If you game on your phone or use wireless charging often, a thinner hybrid case with a rigid back sheds heat better than a chunky multi-layer one.

Finally, drop ratings. "Military grade" usually refers to MIL-STD-810 testing, a broad standard where manufacturers pick their own drop height and number of drops. A claim of 3 metres means more if the brand states test conditions or uses third-party labs.

Practical things to check before buying

Check the lip height. A raised bezel of at least 1mm over the screen and camera island keeps glass off the table when the phone lands face down. Without it, the case is mostly decoration.

Check the thickness around buttons. Overly stiff covered buttons feel mushy and can fail to register. Cut-outs are crisper but let dust in. Also check whether the charging port opening is wide enough for your cables. Third-party USB-C cables with chunky ends can fail to seat. If you're using a desk dock or a high-wattage charger, a quality cable with a slim connector head avoids this headache.

Look at the finish. Matte polycarbonate hides fingerprints but can show scuffs. Clear cases look great but yellow under UV, and some brands now use anti-yellowing additives that actually work. Silicone and fabric cases feel nice but attract lint and wear at the edges.

Thickness and weight add up. A rugged case can push a phone from 200 grams to 280 grams, which you'll notice in a pocket and when one-hand typing. Check that it still fits your car mount, tripod clamp or bike holder, because thick cases can block some mounts and clamps.

Lastly, if you want a kickstand or card slot, check that it doesn't interfere with wireless charging. Metal plates and cards between the phone and the charger cause heat and failed charging.

Brands and local warranty

For reliable options, the established names are OtterBox, UAG, Spigen, Mous, Tech21, Case-Mate, ZAGG and Catalyst, plus first-party cases from Apple and Samsung. Each has a different focus: OtterBox and UAG lean toward heavy protection, Spigen toward value and slim hybrids, Mous toward premium materials and magnetic quality, and first-party cases toward perfect fit and button feel.

Local warranty matters more than most people think. Many rugged brands offer a limited lifetime or multi-year warranty that covers manufacturing defects like peeling, cracking or magnet failure. Buying grey-market imports often voids that, and returns turn into a postage headache. Buying through an Australian retailer means Australian Consumer Law protections apply, and you can get a straightforward replacement if the case fails. Some brands also include a device protection promise on certain lines, so read the terms rather than assuming.

If you're also sorting out the rest of your setup, our Networking and TP-Link ranges cover the home Wi-Fi side of things.

Frequently asked questions

Do thicker cases always protect better?

Not necessarily. Protection comes from geometry and materials: corner dampening, a raised lip and a rigid-plus-soft layering. A well-designed 3mm hybrid can outperform a poorly designed 6mm slab of silicone.

Will a case slow down wireless charging?

A thin, well-made case with a proper magnet ring won't cause a noticeable difference. Thick cases, metal plates and gaps between the phone and the charger cause alignment problems and extra heat, which can slow charging.

Is a screen protector still needed if the case has a raised lip?

Yes, in most cases. The lip protects against flat landings, but it does nothing for keys in your pocket or a hit on the screen edge. A tempered glass protector is cheap insurance.

Can I use a case from the previous phone model?

Usually not. Even small changes in camera bump size, button position or body thickness mean a poor fit, blocked buttons or a loose phone. Match the exact model.

Why does my clear case turn yellow?

UV exposure and oxidation of the TPU. Cheaper cases yellow in a few months. Better ones use anti-yellowing additives or a polycarbonate back, which slows it but doesn't stop it forever.
