Which TP-Link surveillance camera do you actually need?

Most PC builders approach cameras the way they approach a GPU: pick the biggest resolution number and call it a day. With TP-Link Surveillance Cameras the real decisions are about transport, sensor quality and recording architecture. The range splits into two families. Tapo is the consumer line, built around Wi-Fi, a phone app and microSD or cloud storage. VIGI is the business line, built around PoE, a dedicated NVR and ONVIF-style interoperability.

Entry-level Tapo models like the C100 or C200 class give you 1080p, basic IR night vision and a small sensor. That sensor size matters more than the pixel count. A tiny sensor with 2MP or 3MP resolution collects very little light, so after dark you get noisy, smeary footage even with IR assist. Sweet-spot units like the C210, C310 and C320WS class step up to 3MP or 4MP, better lenses, and in some models a spotlight for colour night vision. That is where footage becomes useful for identifying a face or a numberplate rather than just confirming something moved.

Enthusiast territory is VIGI. A VIGI C-series camera typically has a larger sensor, wider dynamic range, tighter ingress protection and proper H.265 encoding. An NVR then records continuously to a surveillance-rated hard drive. Diminishing returns hit hard past 4MP on a typical house, because bitrate and storage demand climb faster than usable detail. Lens choice and light matter more than another megapixel.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The biggest architectural split is Wi-Fi versus PoE. Wi-Fi cameras share airtime with everything else on your network. Under congestion you get bitrate drops, dropped frames and lag in live view. PoE puts power and data down one Cat5e or Cat6 run, with stable latency and no dependence on a flaky 2.4GHz channel. If you can pull cable, do it. Good Cables & Connectors such as solid copper Cat6, not copper-clad aluminium, make a real difference over long runs.

Codec is the next nuance. H.265 roughly halves the bitrate of H.264 for similar quality, which directly stretches your storage. Check that your viewing hardware can decode it smoothly, because older PCs struggle with multiple H.265 streams in software. If you plan a multi-camera wall on a desktop, a modern CPU with hardware decode from CPUs & Processors or an iGPU handles it easily, and a decent panel from Monitors makes the wall worth looking at.

Storage differs too. Tapo cameras lean on microSD cards, and cheap cards die quickly under constant overwrite, so look for high-endurance cards. VIGI NVRs use 3.5 inch surveillance drives built for continuous writes, with firmware that avoids aggressive error-recovery stalls. If you instead run third-party recording software on a PC, a small Solid State Drives (SSD) for the OS and a surveillance HDD for footage is the sensible split, rather than burning through consumer SSD endurance on 24/7 writes.

For the network backbone, a PoE switch from Networking with enough power budget matters. Four cameras at roughly 6W to 12W each is easy, but a switch with a tiny PoE budget will brown out when IR and heaters kick in.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with field of view and mounting height. A 2.8mm lens gives a wide view but little reach, so faces beyond a few metres turn to mush. A 4mm lens narrows the view and pulls detail in. Plan each camera for one job, such as watching a driveway or covering a doorway, rather than hoping one lens does both.

Check the ingress rating. IP65 or IP66 handles Australian rain and dust, but direct afternoon sun on a black housing in summer pushes internal temperatures hard. Cheap units throttle or reboot in that heat, so mount under eaves where possible. If you are housing an NVR or PC in a cupboard or garage, airflow is the same problem you solve in a PC build. A small Computer Cases enclosure with a couple of quiet intake fans from Fans, Heatsinks & Cooling stops a recorder cooking its drive.

Power is the sneaky one. Confirm whether the camera is 802.3af PoE, 12V DC or Tapo's own adapter, and check the cable length against the voltage drop. Power outages also corrupt recordings, so budget for a small UPS or a quality unit from Power Supplies if you are building a PC-based recorder.

Also check the Wi-Fi band support. Some Tapo models are 2.4GHz only, which reaches further through walls but is more crowded. Finally, confirm whether features like person detection and cloud clips need a paid subscription, and whether the camera supports local-only recording and ONVIF if you want to avoid lock-in. If you want to run a dedicated viewing box, a small form factor machine from Computers is plenty.

Brands and local warranty

TP-Link dominates this category locally, and you can browse the full range in the TP-Link collection. Tapo suits renters and small homes, while VIGI suits shops, offices and larger properties. Alternatives people cross-shop include Reolink for budget PoE, Ubiquiti UniFi Protect for an integrated ecosystem, and Eufy or Arlo for battery-powered convenience.

Local warranty matters because cameras sit outside, run constantly and fail in annoying ways, like dead IR boards or water ingress. With genuine Australian stock you deal with a local RMA process under Australian Consumer Law, rather than shipping a unit overseas and waiting weeks. Grey imports can also carry the wrong power plugs, region-locked firmware or no support at all. Buy from an Australian retailer and keep your invoice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need PoE, or is Wi-Fi good enough?

For one or two indoor cameras close to the router, Wi-Fi is fine. For outdoor cameras, long distances or more than a few units, PoE is more reliable. It removes Wi-Fi congestion, cuts latency and means one cable handles power and data.

Is 4MP much better than 2MP?

Yes, if the sensor and lens are good. You get more room to crop in on details like faces and plates. On a tiny sensor in poor light, though, the extra resolution mostly adds noise and file size, so pay attention to night performance too.

How much storage will I need?

It depends on bitrate and retention. A 4MP H.265 camera recording continuously often lands somewhere around 20GB to 40GB per day. Multiply that by your camera count and the days you want to keep, then add some headroom. Motion-only recording cuts it substantially.

Can I use Tapo and VIGI cameras together?

Not in one app, since they run on separate ecosystems. If you want everything on one recorder, stick with one family, or choose cameras that support ONVIF and check compatibility with your NVR first.

Will cameras slow down my home network?

A handful of cameras at moderate bitrates barely register on a gigabit network. Problems come from Wi-Fi congestion or an underpowered switch, not raw bandwidth. Put recording traffic on wired links where you can.
