Which Targus product do you actually need?

Most PC builders think of Targus as "that laptop bag brand", but the range covers three different jobs: carrying gear, powering it, and expanding what a laptop can connect to. Each has its own tiers, and the differences are mechanical rather than cosmetic.

With bags, entry-level sleeves and backpacks use thinner foam and basic zips. Sweet-spot backpacks add a rigid back panel, denser padding around the laptop pocket, and sometimes a suspended compartment so the machine does not hit the ground first when you drop the bag. Premium lines add water-resistant fabric, better strap geometry and luggage pass-throughs. Past that point you are mostly paying for looks.

With docks and hubs, the real split is how video gets out. A basic USB-C hub passes through DisplayPort Alt Mode, which is native and driver-free but limited by your laptop's USB-C video lanes, often one external screen. A DisplayLink dock compresses and sends video over USB data, which lets one cable drive two or three displays but relies on a driver and uses some CPU. That matters for fast motion, but for spreadsheets and email it is fine.

Chargers follow wattage. A 65W unit suits thin-and-light laptops, while 90W to 100W covers most 15 inch machines. Gaming laptops that pull 180W or more are outside universal charger territory.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The biggest trap is assuming every USB-C port does everything. Some laptop ports carry only data and charging, with no video output at all. Look for a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol, or check the spec sheet. If your laptop lacks video over USB-C, only a DisplayLink dock will give you external screens, and that is where a Targus Universal dock earns its keep.

Power Delivery passthrough is the second nuance. A dock rated at 100W total does not give your laptop 100W, because the dock's own ports draw from that budget. A 65W laptop on a 100W dock is comfortable. A laptop that wants 100W plus a few bus-powered drives will throttle charging under load.

Bandwidth also divides tiers. A dock running USB 3.0 speeds shares roughly 5Gbps across every port, so a fast portable drive and a webcam fighting for that pipe will show it. If you copy large files regularly, pair the dock with a quality portable Solid State Drive (SSD) on its own port, or plug it directly into the laptop. Docks with Gigabit Ethernet are fine for most connections, though anyone on a faster home setup should look at dedicated Networking gear, such as the TP-Link range, rather than relying on a dock's built-in port.

For anyone mixing a laptop with a desktop, a dock can also share a keyboard, mouse and Monitors between both machines. Check the monitor's input options first, since a dock outputs HDMI or DisplayPort and you want to match the cable and refresh rate.

Universal chargers use swappable tips or USB-C. Tip-based units are handy for older fleets, but for anything recent, USB-C PD is cleaner and means one charger covers your phone as well.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with dimensions. Bag manufacturers list the maximum laptop size, and that figure is the screen diagonal on a typical chassis, not the whole footprint. Measure your laptop's actual width and depth, especially if it is a gaming model with big rear exhaust vents. A "16 inch" bag can be tight on a 16 inch machine with a chunky charger brick.

If you are carrying a small-form-factor PC, check the bag's internal depth against the dimensions of your Computer Cases before assuming it fits. Most laptop backpacks are not rated for desktop internals.

On docks, check the host cable length and port placement. A short fixed cable can force awkward desk layouts. Confirm that the dock ships with its own power brick, because cheaper hubs rely entirely on the laptop. Heat is worth considering too. Docks that drive multiple displays run warm, so leave airflow around them rather than burying them behind a monitor stand.

For cabling, a proper certified Cables & Connectors purchase matters. A cheap USB-C cable with no video or high-wattage rating can cripple a good dock. Look for 5A or 100W rated cables when charging beefier laptops.

For security, cable locks rely on a Kensington-style slot, which not every thin laptop has. Check your chassis first.

If you are building a full desk setup, a dock is one piece. You may still want a desktop with proper Computers or a build with the right CPUs & Processors, Motherboards and Graphics Cards / GPU for heavier work, with the laptop as the portable companion.

Brands and local Australian warranty

Targus sits alongside Kensington, Belkin, Anker, Logitech and the OEM options from Dell, HP and Lenovo. Targus tends to be strongest on bags and universal accessories. Kensington is well regarded for docks and security locks, and Anker and Belkin are common for compact charging. For heavy Thunderbolt use, many buyers also look at CalDigit or Dell-branded docks.

Australian warranty matters because accessories fail in boring, annoying ways: frayed cables, dead dock ports, split zips. A locally supported product means you deal with a local returns process under Australian Consumer Law, not a shipping nightmare overseas. Buy from a retailer that supplies local stock, keep your invoice, and check the terms on the specific product, since warranty periods vary between bag lines and powered electronics.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Targus dock work with my laptop?

It depends on the dock type. DisplayLink docks work with most USB-C or USB-A laptops once the driver is installed. Native docks need DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt support from your laptop's port.

How many watts of charging do I need?

Match your laptop's original charger rating. A higher-wattage charger is safe because the laptop only draws what it needs, but a lower one may charge slowly or not at all under load.

Can a dock run two 4K monitors?

Many can, but check refresh rates. Some docks do dual 4K at 30Hz, while others hit 60Hz on one screen. The dock spec and your laptop's output both matter.

Is a more expensive backpack worth it?

For daily carrying, yes up to a point. Better padding, strap design and weather resistance improve protection and comfort. Beyond that, extra features add cost with little practical benefit.

Will a dock slow down my external drive?

It can if several high-bandwidth devices share the dock. For big transfers, use a direct laptop port or a dock with faster USB 3.2 ports.
