Collection: Mobile Phone Screen Protectors

Which screen protector do you actually need?

Most PC builders think of a screen protector as a sticker, but the differences between tiers are mechanical. Entry-level options are usually PET film or basic TPU. They resist light scuffs from keys and grit, but they are soft, so they pick up fine scratches quickly, and the oleophobic coating (the fingerprint-resistant layer) wears off within a few months. Sweet-spot protectors are tempered glass, typically around 0.33mm thick. They have a proper oleophobic layer, 2.5D rounded edges and a bundled alignment frame. The glass absorbs and spreads impact energy, so a drop that would chip your screen often cracks the protector instead. Enthusiast lines add things like reinforced edges, anti-reflective coatings, UV-cured liquid adhesive and tougher glass chemistry.

Diminishing returns kick in quickly. Moving from film to decent tempered glass is a massive jump in scratch and impact protection. Moving from decent glass to a premium line mostly buys you easier installation, better touch feel and a longer-lasting coating. Hydrogel and self-healing TPU sit in between. They feel closest to the bare screen and are great for curved displays, but they offer less impact protection than glass.

The "9H" rating on the packaging is a pencil hardness test, not the Mohs scale. It tells you the coating resists a hard pencil lead, not that it survives keys in your pocket forever. Treat it as a baseline, not a selling point.

Technical nuances and compatibility traps

The biggest trap is the fingerprint sensor. Many phones use optical sensors under the display, and these work fine with most thin glass. Phones with ultrasonic sensors are fussier. Ultrasonic sensors read through the screen using sound waves, so a thick protector or an air gap under the glass can make unlocking unreliable. For those handsets, look for protectors explicitly rated as compatible, or go with a thin film or the liquid-adhesive dome glass approach used by Whitestone.

Curved-edge displays are the second trap. Flat tempered glass can only cover the flat area, so you either live with uncovered edges or step up to a curved-fit option. Full-adhesive glass fills the whole surface and keeps touch response sharp. Cheaper "edge glue only" glass leaves an air gap that causes rainbow patches and reduced sensitivity.

Surface finish matters as much as thickness. Clear glass keeps the panel looking sharp, much like a high-contrast IPS or OLED screen. Matte and anti-glare finishes cut reflections but add a slight grain and soften fine text, the same compromise you see on matte Monitors. Privacy filters darken the image and narrow the viewing angle, which is the point, but you will usually push brightness up and lose some battery.

For concrete families to look for, Spigen's Glas.tR and EZ Fit range is the mainstream sweet spot, and the alignment tray is excellent. PanzerGlass Ultra-Wide Fit and Belkin UltraGlass sit slightly higher with tougher glass and neat installation. ZAGG's InvisibleShield Glass line covers both glass and film. Whitestone Dome is the enthusiast pick for curved or ultrasonic-sensor phones, but it costs more and the install is fiddly.

Practical things to check before buying

First, confirm the exact model, not just the brand. Pro and standard variants often differ by a millimetre or two in screen size and camera cutouts, and a protector for the wrong one will either overhang or leave gaps.

Second, check case compatibility. Full-coverage glass that runs right to the bezel can lift at the edges when a snug case presses against it. "Case-friendly" protectors stop a hair short to avoid this. If you run a thick rugged case, go case-friendly. If you use a slim case or none at all, full-coverage is fine.

Third, plan the install. Dust is the enemy, so do it in a bathroom after a hot shower or at least well away from fans and carpet. A quick wipe with the supplied alcohol wipe, a dust-removal sticker and the alignment frame solve most problems. It is the same discipline as seating a CPU cooler: slow, clean and done once. Small bubbles usually push out to the edge, but trapped dust means peeling the protector off and starting again.

Third-party gear on your desk matters too. If you are sorting your charging setup, decent Cables & Connectors protect the port the same way a protector protects the screen. A fresh protector also helps if you are setting up a new Computers workstation and want your phone as a second screen without worrying about desk scratches.

Finally, check what is in the box. Two or three packs are better value than singles because first attempts at alignment fail more often than people admit.

Brands and local warranty

Spigen, ZAGG, Belkin, PanzerGlass, OtterBox, Whitestone and Mous are the names you will see most often from reputable sellers. The cheap unbranded stuff is often fine on day one, but the adhesive, coating consistency and cutout accuracy vary from batch to batch.

Local warranty matters more than it sounds. Genuine Australian stock is covered under Australian Consumer Law, and you get a local point of contact if the protector arrives defective, mis-sized or peels at the edges. Some brands also offer replacement guarantees or device protection programs, but the terms vary a lot. Read what is actually covered, because many only replace the protector itself. Grey imports can fall outside the manufacturer's local support, so buy from an Australian retailer that stands behind what it sells.

Frequently asked questions

Is tempered glass better than film?

For impact and scratch protection, yes. Glass is harder, thicker and spreads drop energy. Film is thinner, better on curved screens and usually cheaper, but it scratches easily and offers little impact resistance. For most people, glass is the sweet spot.

Will a screen protector break my in-screen fingerprint sensor?

It can. Optical sensors normally cope with thin glass, but ultrasonic sensors can struggle with thick protectors or air gaps. Choose one marked as sensor-compatible for your exact model, and avoid cheap glass with gaps under the sensor area.

Can I put a new protector over a cracked one?

No. A cracked protector can have sharp edges and uneven surfaces, so the new one will not sit flush and may trap air and dust. Peel the old one off slowly, clean the screen properly and start fresh.

Do I need a protector if my phone has strong glass?

Modern phone glass resists drops better than older generations, but it still scratches from sand and keys, and it can still shatter. A protector is a cheap sacrificial layer that preserves resale value and replaces easily.

Does a matte protector hurt screen quality?

Slightly. It cuts glare and fingerprints, but it adds a faint grain and softens fine detail. If you mostly use your phone indoors, clear glass is sharper. If you use it outdoors a lot, matte can be worth the trade.
