Collection: Leader Laptops

Which laptop tier do you actually need?

Most PC builders look at a laptop the way they look at a desktop, scanning for the best parts list, and that's the first trap. In the Leader Laptops range, the tiers differ in how the machine is engineered, not just in the CPU name on the sticker. Entry machines typically use a Core 5, Core Ultra 5 or Ryzen 5 class chip, 8GB to 16GB of memory (sometimes a single channel), and a basic IPS panel at around 250 nits with weak colour coverage. Cooling is usually one heatpipe and one fan. They're fine for study, browsing and office work, but single-channel memory halves the bandwidth the integrated graphics can draw on, and a thin heatsink means the CPU drops its boost clocks quickly under sustained load.

The sweet spot is where most people should land. You get 16GB to 32GB of dual-channel DDR5 or fast LPDDR5X, a 100% sRGB panel at 400 nits or more, two fans with a proper heatpipe layout, and a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive. That's the point where the machine stops feeling compromised for everyday work.

Enthusiast laptops add a discrete mobile GPU with a high TGP (total graphics power), vapour chamber cooling, a MUX switch, and OLED or mini-LED panels at 165Hz to 240Hz. Diminishing returns hit hard here. Two laptops carrying the same GPU name can differ by 15 to 20 percent in real performance purely because one runs at 80W and the other at 140W. Check the wattage, not the badge.

Upgrading and technical nuances

Memory is the biggest compatibility fork. Thin-and-light models increasingly use soldered LPDDR5X, which offers higher bandwidth and lower power draw but can never be upgraded. Performance and gaming models usually have two DDR5 SODIMM slots, which are upgradeable and run dual channel. Don't confuse the two form factors. Anything in our Desktop Memory range is full-size DIMM for desktops and won't physically fit a laptop. For SODIMM, look at Crucial or Kingston Fury Impact kits.

Storage is simpler, but there are traps. Most laptops take an M.2 2280 drive, while some compact and handheld-style machines need 2242. For the sweet spot, a Gen4 drive from the Samsung 990, Crucial T500 or WD_BLACK SN850X families is ideal, and you can browse them in Solid State Drives (SSD). Gen5 drives are faster on paper but run much hotter, and inside a thin chassis with no real heatsink they often throttle back to Gen4 speeds anyway. Also avoid DRAM-less budget drives if you plan to do heavy file work, since sustained writes fall off quickly once the cache fills.

On the processor side, Core Ultra and Ryzen AI chips have NPUs, but the real-world difference for most buyers comes from sustained power limits. A chip allowed to hold 45W under load will beat a "faster" chip pinned at 28W in a thin body. Wi-Fi 7 helps only if your router supports it, so if you're upgrading the home network, have a look at Networking and the TP-Link range.

If you never move the machine, be honest with yourself. A desktop from Computers, or a custom build with a Graphics Card / GPU and a chip from CPUs & Processors, will outperform a laptop at the same price, run cooler and be upgradeable for years.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with the charger. Gaming and creator laptops can ship with 200W to 300W bricks that are heavy and bulky, so factor that into your carry weight. USB-C charging at 65W to 100W is brilliant for ultraportables, but it won't sustain a high-TGP GPU. Battery capacity matters too. Airlines cap carry-on batteries at 100Wh, and most large-battery laptops sit right at that limit.

Next, check ports and display outputs. If you plan to run an external screen, confirm whether the HDMI port is 2.1 or 2.0, and whether USB-C supports DisplayPort output. A decent Monitor and the right lead from Cables & Connectors turn a laptop into a proper desk setup. Check where the video outputs are wired too, as some are tied to the integrated graphics and not the discrete GPU, which affects high refresh rate gaming.

For thermals, look at independent reviews of surface temperatures and fan noise, not just the spec sheet. A cooling pad from Fans, Heatsinks & Cooling can lower temperatures a few degrees, but it can't rescue a poorly designed chassis. Finally, confirm the keyboard layout, panel finish (glossy or matte), webcam quality and whether the RAM and SSD are accessible once you pull the bottom panel.

Brands and local warranty

For the Leader Laptops category, the reliable names are ASUS (Vivobook, Zenbook, TUF, ROG), Lenovo (IdeaPad, ThinkPad, Legion), HP (Pavilion, Omen, EliteBook), Dell (Inspiron, XPS, Alienware), Acer (Aspire, Swift, Nitro, Predator), MSI (Modern, Katana, Raider) and Gigabyte (G series, AORUS). ThinkPad and EliteBook lines are generally the pick for durability and serviceability, while ROG, Legion and Alienware chase peak performance.

Genuine Australian warranty matters more with laptops than with most parts. Batteries, hinges, keyboards and screens are the common failure points, and a local warranty means repairs are done here, with local parts and support, instead of you shipping it overseas. Grey imports can come with the wrong keyboard layout, a different charger plug and no valid manufacturer cover. Australian Consumer Law also gives you rights beyond the written warranty. Keep your invoice and register the serial number early.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM do I need in a laptop today?

16GB is the practical minimum for modern multitasking, and 32GB is worth it for creative work, heavy browser use or virtual machines. If the memory is soldered, buy the capacity you'll need for the life of the machine, because you can't add more later.

Is a faster SSD worth paying extra for?

Not usually. A quality Gen4 drive loads games and apps almost as quickly as Gen5 in everyday use, with far less heat. Spend the difference on more capacity or a better display.

Can I upgrade a laptop's graphics later?

Almost never. Mobile GPUs are soldered to the board, so choose the graphics tier you need from day one. Memory and storage are the realistic upgrades.

Is a laptop with integrated graphics enough for gaming?

For esports titles and older games at lower settings, yes, especially with dual-channel memory. For modern demanding titles, you want a discrete GPU with a decent TGP.

What should I look at besides the CPU and GPU?

Panel quality, cooling design, port selection and warranty. These affect your day-to-day experience far more than a small benchmark gap between chips.
