Collection: HP Computer Monitors

HP screens are the safe pick for a work desk, but the spec sheet buries the panel type that decides how they look. After a Full HD panel for everyday work, a 4K screen for detail, or a USB-C monitor that charges the laptop off one cable? Match it to the job. Shop HP monitors alongside the wider monitors range and the rest of HP. Not sure what your laptop can drive? Ask us. Genuine stock, local warranty, and fast local dispatch.

Which HP monitor tier do you actually need?

Most PC builders pick a monitor off the headline spec, usually refresh rate or resolution, and then wonder why the thing feels average on the desk. With HP Computer Monitors, the tiers differ in panel quality, stand ergonomics and connectivity as much as in raw numbers. The entry tier, think HP Series 3 Pro or the older P-series, uses a 1080p IPS or VA panel at 60 to 100Hz, roughly 250 to 300 nits, and a tilt-only stand. It's perfectly good for spreadsheets, browsing and general home use.

The sweet spot is the HP Series 5 Pro and the business-focused E-series. You get 1440p at 27 inches (about 109 PPI, which is the crisp-without-scaling-headaches zone), 99% sRGB coverage, a height-adjustable stand and often USB-C with a few dozen watts of power delivery. Enthusiast lines like the OMEN gaming range, the Z-series creator panels and the Series 7 Pro Thunderbolt models add 144Hz and above, wider DCI-P3 coverage, factory calibration, 90W-plus laptop charging and an in-built dock.

Diminishing returns kick in fast. Going from 60Hz to 144Hz is a huge, obvious jump. Going from 165Hz to 240Hz is subtle unless your GPU is pushing that many frames consistently. Likewise, 4K on a 27 inch panel looks gorgeous but forces 150% scaling, so your usable workspace is about the same as 1440p while your graphics card works much harder.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The panel technology matters more than the number on the box. IPS gives you wide viewing angles and accurate colour, but native contrast sits around 1000:1, so dark scenes look a bit grey in a dim room. VA panels reach 3000:1 or better and look richer for films, but pixel transitions in dark tones can smear, which shows up as trailing in fast games. OLED, which HP now offers in its OMEN Transcend line, gives you effectively infinite contrast and near-instant pixel response, with the trade-offs of price, text fringing on some subpixel layouts and burn-in management.

Response time claims need a pinch of salt. A "1ms" figure is usually MPRT or the best-case grey-to-grey with aggressive overdrive. Overshoot (inverse ghosting) can make a 1ms panel look worse than a well-tuned 4ms one. Check independent reviews rather than the spec sheet.

Connectivity is where compatibility traps hide. DisplayPort 1.4 handles 1440p at 240Hz and 4K at 120Hz with Display Stream Compression. HDMI 2.1 is the one you want if you're feeding a console as well. For a single-cable laptop setup, check the USB-C port actually carries DisplayPort Alt Mode and the wattage it delivers. A 65W port will starve a performance laptop under load.

On the PC side, your graphics card decides how much refresh rate and resolution you can actually use. Pairing a 4K 144Hz OMEN with an entry-level card is a recipe for disappointment. If you're running a basic office rig on integrated graphics from modern CPUs & Processors, a 1440p 75 to 100Hz Series 5 Pro is a far smarter match than a high-refresh gaming panel. If you want a ready-to-go setup, browse our Computers range alongside the monitor.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with the desk. A 27 inch monitor is roughly 61cm wide, and a 34 inch ultrawide pushes past 80cm. Measure your desk depth too, because you want 60 to 80cm of viewing distance. If you're running dual screens, consider VESA 100x100 compatibility so you can swap to monitor arms later. HP's budget stands are often tilt-only, so check whether height adjustment and swivel are included.

Next, cabling. The cable in the box is sometimes HDMI only, and an older HDMI cable can cap you at 60Hz at 1440p. Grab a certified DisplayPort cable or a proper HDMI 2.1 lead from our Cables & Connectors range if you're chasing high refresh. Confirm your GPU has the right outputs, and if you're running multiple screens, count the ports.

Check brightness and finish as well. 250 nits is fine in a dim room but washed out near a west-facing window. Glossy and anti-glare coatings behave differently, so think about your lighting. Be sceptical of "HDR400" badges on IPS panels without local dimming, because they rarely deliver real HDR impact.

Finally, think about case and desk layout. If your tower is compact, check where the cable runs will go. A large Computer Case beside an ultrawide can crowd the desk quickly. If you're using a USB-C dock monitor with built-in Ethernet, make sure your Networking gear, such as a TP-Link switch or router, is within cable reach.

Brands and local warranty

HP is a solid choice for reliable business and creator panels, with strong ergonomics and consistent QC. Other reputable names worth cross-shopping include Dell (UltraSharp), LG (UltraGear and UltraFine), ASUS (ProArt and TUF Gaming), BenQ (especially for colour work), Samsung (Odyssey) and MSI. Each has strengths, and HP tends to shine for office and hybrid-work setups with USB-C docking.

Genuine Australian warranty support matters more for monitors than most parts. Panels are fragile to ship, and pixel-defect policies differ between brands. Buying through an authorised local retailer means a real claims pathway under Australian Consumer Law, no international freight to get a replacement and no grey-import headaches. Keep your invoice and photograph any dead or stuck pixels promptly, because policies often depend on count and location.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1440p or 4K better for an HP monitor at 27 inches?

For most people, 1440p is the sweet spot. It's sharp, easy for a mid-range GPU to drive and doesn't need heavy scaling. 4K makes sense if you do photo or video work, or want ultra-crisp text and own a graphics card that can handle it.

Do I need a high refresh rate for office work?

No, but it's nice. A 100Hz panel makes cursor movement and scrolling feel smoother, and it's often available on Series 5 Pro models for little extra. Anything beyond that is mainly for gaming.

Will USB-C work with my laptop?

Only if the laptop's USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt, and the monitor's power delivery matches your laptop's needs. Check both specs before buying, because a 65W monitor won't fully power a 100W laptop under load.

Is IPS or VA better?

IPS is better for colour accuracy and viewing angles, so it suits creative and general use. VA offers deeper blacks and suits dim rooms and media, but can smear in fast motion. Choose based on your room and your content.

Can I use an HP monitor for console gaming?

Yes, provided it has HDMI 2.1 for 4K 120Hz on current consoles. Many office models only have HDMI 1.4 or 2.0, which limits you to 60Hz at 4K or 1440p, so check the port spec first.
