Collection: Belkin Cables

Which Belkin cable do you actually need?

Most PC builders treat cables as an afterthought, then wonder why their 4K high refresh monitor flickers or their external SSD crawls at a fraction of its rated speed. With Belkin cables, the tiers come down to bandwidth rating, conductor and shielding quality, and whether the cable carries an e-marker chip. Price is a poor guide on its own.

Entry-level cables, like a basic High Speed HDMI lead (18Gbps), a USB 2.0 charge cable or a Cat6 patch lead, are fine for 1080p or 1440p at 60Hz, peripheral charging and gigabit networking. The conductors are thinner and the shielding is lighter, which only matters as length increases.

The sweet spot is where most desktop users should land. That means Ultra High Speed HDMI (48Gbps, Fixed Rate Link signalling), a certified DisplayPort lead, or a USB-C cable rated for 10Gbps data and 100W charging. These have tighter twisted pair construction and better shielding, so they hold signal integrity at 4K 120Hz or when you daisy-chain a dock.

Enthusiast cables, such as Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 40Gbps leads and 240W USB-C cables, add active signal conditioning chips and e-markers that negotiate power and speed with the device. You pay for the silicon, not for prettier braiding. Diminishing returns hit hard after that. A digital cable either carries the signal cleanly or it doesn't, so gold-plated marketing and extra thick jackets won't make your picture sharper.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The biggest trap is assuming that if a plug fits, it does everything. USB-C is a connector shape, not a speed. One cable might carry 480Mbps and 60W, another 40Gbps and 240W, and they look identical. Check the packaging for the data rate and wattage, and treat unmarked cables as charge-only.

For video, HDMI 2.1 matters if you run 4K at 120Hz or higher, especially with HDR and 10-bit colour. Display Stream Compression (DSC) eases the bandwidth load, but you want headroom, so buy the 48Gbps cable. DisplayPort is the default for PC Monitors at high refresh rates. DisplayPort 1.4 handles most 1440p and 4K gaming panels, while the newer UHBR link rates need properly certified cables, particularly at the top speeds. Your Graphics Cards / GPU outputs decide which standard you can actually use, so check the card first.

On modern platforms (AM5 and Intel Core Ultra LGA1851), USB4 or Thunderbolt ports vary by Motherboards model. Mainstream boards from ranges like ASUS TUF, MSI Tomahawk and Gigabyte AORUS often have fast USB-C on the rear I/O, but 40Gbps ports are less common on cheaper models. Don't buy a Thunderbolt 4 cable until you've confirmed the port on your board or add-in card supports it. Passive 40Gbps cables also top out at short lengths, roughly 0.8m, and longer runs need active electronics.

For storage, a USB-C cable bundled with a Solid State Drives (SSD) enclosure is usually fine. If you're running a fast NVMe enclosure from a Samsung 990 or WD_BLACK drive, though, a 10Gbps or 20Gbps cable can be a bottleneck. The drive can do more than the cable lets through.

For networking, Cat6 handles gigabit and 2.5GbE easily, and short runs of 10GbE. Longer 10GbE runs are safer on Cat6a. If you're building a home network around TP-Link routers and switches, browse our Networking range for matching gear.

Practical things to check before clicking buy

Length is the first thing. High-bandwidth signals degrade with distance, so buy the shortest cable that routes cleanly. A 1m to 2m HDMI 2.1 lead is ideal. Beyond about 3m, passive cables get unreliable at full speed, and you'd want active or optical designs.

Connector size is next. Chunky strain relief or right-angle plugs can foul on tight monitor ports or wall-mount arms. Check the clearance behind your display. In your Computer Cases, thick braided cables need a gentler bend radius, so leave room behind the motherboard tray and avoid sharp kinks near the I/O shield.

For charging cables, match the wattage to the device. A laptop that wants 100W will crawl on a 60W cable, and 240W Extended Power Range charging needs both an EPR cable and a compatible charger. High-wattage cables can run warm, which is normal, but fraying or heat near the connector means it's time to replace it.

Remember that Belkin cables are for external connections. Inside the build, you'll want proper modular leads for your Power Supplies or ATX Power Supply units, including native 12V-2x6 cables. Never swap in a random cable that isn't made for that PSU, because pinouts differ between brands. For internal extensions, adapters and fan or RGB leads, check our Cables & Connectors range. If your cable is feeding a new rig, see Computers for ready-built options, and CPUs & Processors or Desktop Memory if you're still planning the core parts. Your Fans, Heatsinks & Cooling and CPU Cooling choices also affect cable routing, so plan the airflow path before you tidy up.

Brands and local warranty

Belkin is a safe pick for certified HDMI, USB-C and Thunderbolt cables, with a long track record in docks, chargers and accessories. Other trustworthy names include Anker, UGREEN, Cable Matters and Club 3D, depending on the spec you need. Stay away from no-name cables with inflated claims and no certification marks.

Local warranty matters more than most people think. Cables fail from internal wire breaks and dodgy connectors, and a failing e-marker or poor shielding can cause intermittent dropouts that are maddening to diagnose. Buying from an Australian retailer means you get a GST invoice, proper stock that suits local power and standards, and a straightforward return process under Australian Consumer Law. Imported grey stock can leave you posting a cable overseas for a refund.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K gaming?

If you're running 4K at 120Hz with HDR, yes, an Ultra High Speed 48Gbps cable gives you the headroom. For 4K at 60Hz, a standard High Speed cable is fine.

Will any USB-C cable work with my external SSD?

No. Many USB-C cables only support USB 2.0 speeds. Look for one rated at 10Gbps or higher to match the enclosure and drive.

Is Thunderbolt 4 backwards compatible with USB-C?

Generally yes. A Thunderbolt 4 cable works with USB-C devices, but you only get Thunderbolt speeds if both the port and device support it.

How long can an HDMI or DisplayPort cable be before it causes problems?

At full bandwidth, passive cables are most reliable under about 2m to 3m. Longer runs call for active or fibre cables.

Do expensive cables improve picture quality?

Not once the cable meets the spec. Digital signals either arrive cleanly or they don't. Pay for certification, shielding and a proper warranty, not for fancy plating.
