Which Brateck mount or stand do you actually need?

Most PC builders spend weeks agonising over GPU and CPU choices, then bolt a flagship monitor onto the cheapest stand they can find. Brateck covers the part of the setup that decides whether you can actually use that screen comfortably: monitor arms, desk mounts, TV brackets, under-desk holders and sit-stand hardware. The tiers come down to how the arm moves and how it holds weight.

Entry-level mounts are usually fixed or tilt-only brackets, or basic single-pivot arms with mechanical joints. They are rigid and cheap, but you set the position with an Allen key and live with it. The sweet-spot tier is the gas spring arm. A pressurised cylinder balances the monitor's weight against a spring force, so you can push the screen up, down, in or out with one hand and it stays put. The catch is that each arm has a weight window. Too light and the monitor floats upward, too heavy and it sags.

Enthusiast and heavy-duty arms use stronger steel or aluminium extrusions, thicker joints and higher rated loads for super ultrawides or dual-screen setups on a single pole. Diminishing returns hit fast. Once the arm is rated well above your monitor's weight and holds position without drift, a more expensive finish mostly buys you cosmetics. If you run a big curved panel from our Monitors range, heavy-duty rating matters. For a pair of 24 to 27 inch screens, a mid-tier gas spring arm is the practical sweet spot.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The first number to check is weight, and it is not the weight printed on the box. Look up the panel weight without its stock stand. Many monitors drop several kilos once the stand comes off, and that is the figure you compare to the arm's rated range. Gas spring arms are tuned for a window per screen, so a light 27 inch IPS and a heavy 34 inch curved ultrawide may not suit the same arm.

VESA mounting is the second trap. Most current monitors use 75x75 or 100x100, but some curved, ultra-thin or all-in-one designs have recessed mounting holes, plastic rear shells or non-standard patterns. Those often need spacers or an adapter plate, and the bolts supplied in the box may be too short. Check the monitor's manual before assuming it will fit.

Arm construction matters more than the marketing. Aluminium arms keep weight down and resist flex, while steel is stiffer and heavier. Cheaper arms often use plastic covers over steel joints, which is fine until the tension screws loosen. A better arm has tighter tolerances at the pivots, so it holds position without the slow creep you get on a worn one. For benchmarking, compare against premium lines like the Ergotron LX or HX ranges. Brateck sits in the value-to-mid space, with good engineering for the money, though you will not match the finish of a very high-end arm.

For sit-stand hardware, the key spec is the frame's motor and column design. Dual-motor frames with multi-stage columns lift more weight and wobble less at full height than single-motor budget units. A heavier desktop, such as a thick solid top plus multiple monitors and a tower, wants the higher lift rating rather than the bare minimum.

Practical things to check before buying

Check your desk first. Clamp mounts typically accept a limited thickness range, and many hollow-core or particleboard desks can crush under the clamp. A steel reinforcement plate spreads the load, which is worth using on cheaper desks. Glass tops, desks with a rear lip, and frames with cross-braces close to the edge can block a clamp entirely. In those cases a grommet mount through a cable hole is better, if the hole size fits.

Reach and pole height come next. Arms have a limited extension, so measure your desk depth and sitting distance. Dual-screen setups also need clearance between the monitors and the pole, and tall stacked arrangements need a longer pole. If you plan to run a tower under or beside the desk, check that the Computer Cases you are considering suit an under-desk holder or fit the space.

Cable length is the sneaky one. A monitor on an arm moves, and a short DisplayPort or HDMI cable will pull tight at full extension. Pick up longer leads from Cables & Connectors rather than discovering it on installation day. For higher refresh rate or high-resolution panels, make sure the cable is certified for the bandwidth you need.

For TV and wall mounts, find the studs or use the right anchors for brick or masonry. Plasterboard alone is not safe for a heavy screen. Check the bracket's rated load and its VESA range, and leave room behind the display for plugs and the sort of bend a thick cable needs.

Brands and local warranty

Brateck is a well-known name for mounts and stands, and you will often compare it with Ergotron, Fellowes, Kensington, and Logitech accessories, plus value-focused no-name arms. The practical difference is support. A mount carries your expensive screen, so a failed gas cylinder or a cracked bracket is not a minor problem.

Buying through an Australian retailer means warranty claims are handled locally, under Australian Consumer Law, without shipping a bulky arm overseas. Keep your invoice, note the serial or model number, and photograph the damage if something goes wrong. Grey-market imports and marketplace sellers can leave you chasing a seller who has vanished.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether a gas spring arm will hold my monitor?

Check the monitor's weight without the stand, then compare it with the arm's rated range. Aim for a monitor weight comfortably inside the range, not at the extreme edge. Arms are tuned for a window, so too light a screen can drift upward.

Will a Brateck arm fit my ultrawide?

Often yes, as long as the arm is rated for the screen's weight and the VESA pattern matches. Large ultrawides are heavy and wide, so a heavy-duty arm is the safer pick than a standard single-screen model.

Can I clamp an arm to a glass or thin desk?

Glass is a poor choice for a standard clamp, and thin or hollow-core desks can crush. Use a reinforcement plate or a grommet mount if the desk allows. If the desk is very flimsy, a freestanding stand may be better.

Do I need a special cable when I switch to an arm?

Not special, but longer. The monitor moves around, so short leads can strain the ports. Check the bandwidth rating too if you run high refresh rates.

Is a sit-stand frame worth it for a gaming setup?

If you spend long hours seated, it helps. Look at lift rating and column stability, because a heavy tower, multiple monitors and a thick desktop all add load.
