Collection: Ubiquiti Wireless Access Points

Which Ubiquiti wireless access point do you actually need?

Most PC builders get the wired side of a network sorted first, then realise their Wi-Fi is the bottleneck. A UniFi access point fixes that, but the range is split into tiers that behave quite differently once a few dozen devices are connected. Ubiquiti Wireless Access Points are ceiling or wall mounted, powered over Ethernet, and managed through a controller rather than a stand-alone web page like a consumer router.

The entry tier (U7 Lite or the older U6 Lite and U6+ class) uses 2x2 MIMO radios. That means two spatial streams per band, which matches what most phones, laptops and handheld consoles can actually use. These suit a typical home or small office with a modest number of clients. The sweet-spot tier (U7 Pro, U6 Pro) adds a 6 GHz radio on the Wi-Fi 7 models, wider channels and a 2.5GbE uplink so the wired port doesn't cap wireless throughput. The enthusiast tier (U7 Pro Max, U6 Enterprise, E7-class) adds extra spatial streams, more radio capacity and higher client density handling, aimed at large houses, offices and busy shared spaces.

The real difference between tiers is airtime, not headline speed. A wider 320 MHz channel on 6 GHz raises peak bandwidth for one client, but a client can only use as many spatial streams as its own antennas allow. Extra radios and streams help when many devices talk at once, because the access point can schedule them more efficiently. If your household has under about 30 active devices, diminishing returns kick in quickly above the sweet-spot tier. Spending more on cabling and placement usually beats spending more on the access point.

Upgrading and technical nuances

Wi-Fi 7 is the current flagship standard, and it brings 6 GHz with wider channels, plus Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which lets a compatible client use multiple bands at once for lower latency and steadier throughput. The catch is that client support matters. A Wi-Fi 6 laptop connected to a Wi-Fi 7 access point still gets the cleaner airtime, but not the new headline features. Many current-gen motherboards ship with Wi-Fi 7 adapters, so check the spec sheet on a Motherboards listing if you want your desktop to take advantage of it. Better yet, run a cable to the desktop and keep Wi-Fi for everything else.

The uplink is a common trap. A 1GbE port caps real throughput below what a modern radio can deliver, so a Wi-Fi 7 access point on 1GbE wastes some of its potential. Look for 2.5GbE on the access point and a matching switch port. Browse the Networking category for PoE switches with multi-gig ports, because a cheap 1GbE PoE switch undermines the whole setup.

PoE standard matters too. Entry models typically run on 802.3af, while higher-tier models often want 802.3at (PoE+) to power all radios at full capacity. Plug a hungry model into an underpowered switch and it may boot with reduced features or not at all. Always check the power draw in the spec sheet against your switch's per-port and total PoE budget.

On the software side, UniFi access points are managed by the UniFi Network application. You can run that on a UniFi gateway or Cloud Key, or self-host it on a small always-on box or a spare machine from the Computers range. The controller gives you roaming, VLANs, guest networks and per-client stats, which is the real reason people choose UniFi over consumer mesh kits. Mesh backhaul (wireless uplink between access points) works, but a wired backhaul is far better because wireless hops halve effective throughput on shared airtime.

Practical things to check before buying

Placement beats model choice. Mount the access point on the ceiling, central to where devices live, rather than on a shelf near the router. Brick, concrete and foil-backed insulation hurt 5 GHz and 6 GHz signals badly, and 6 GHz has the shortest reach of all bands. In a larger or multi-storey home, two sweet-spot access points on wired backhaul will outperform one enthusiast unit trying to cover everything.

Cabling comes next. Use solid-core Cat6 or better for in-wall runs, and keep each run under 90 metres. Pre-made patch leads and thin copper-clad cable cause PoE voltage drop and flaky links. Sort the run properly with quality options from Cables & Connectors, and don't skimp on the termination.

Check the mounting style as well. Standard disc models mount to a ceiling or wall, in-wall units replace a wall plate and have limited antenna performance, and outdoor units need weather-rated housing and proper cable glands. Heat is a minor point since these are passively cooled, but avoid cramming one into a sealed cavity above insulation in an Australian summer roof space.

Finally, confirm that you have a gateway or router that can handle your internet speed with routing features on. A good access point does nothing if your gateway's CPU chokes on a fast NBN plan with traffic inspection turned on.

Brands and local warranty

Ubiquiti is the main name here, with UniFi covering everything from small home models through to stadium-grade enterprise gear. The closest alternative is TP-Link's Omada line, which suits buyers who want a similar controller-based setup at a lower price. You can browse that range in the TP-Link collection. Both integrate well with managed PoE switches.

Warranty matters more than most people think. Buy through an authorised Australian channel so that faults are handled under local warranty and Australian Consumer Law rather than via a overseas return. Grey imports may ship with the wrong power accessories, lack local compliance markings, or have no local support path. When an access point is mounted on a ceiling, a dead unit is a hassle, so having a straightforward local replacement process is worth paying for.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Wi-Fi 7 or is Wi-Fi 6 still fine?

Wi-Fi 6 is still fine for most homes if your internet plan and devices don't push past gigabit. Wi-Fi 7 gives you 6 GHz with wider channels and MLO, which helps latency and congestion, but only for clients that support it. If you are buying new today, the price gap is small enough that Wi-Fi 7 is the sensible long-term pick.

Can I use a UniFi access point without a UniFi router?

Yes. Access points work behind almost any router. You will need the UniFi Network application running somewhere for setup and management, but your existing router can handle DHCP and routing.

Do I need a PoE switch, or can I use an injector?

Either works. A single access point is fine with a PoE injector, but if you plan on two or more, a PoE switch keeps cabling tidy. Make sure the injector or switch supports the standard your model needs.

Is mesh good enough instead of running cable?

Wireless mesh works, but every wireless hop uses airtime that clients also need. Wired backhaul is much more consistent, especially for gaming and video calls. Use wireless mesh only where cabling really isn't an option.

How many access points does my home need?

One good unit centrally placed covers an average single-storey home. Larger or multi-storey homes, or those with dense building materials, generally need one per floor or zone. Add more only when signal strength drops, not because of square metres alone.
