Which type of water cooling do you actually need?

Most PC builders land in one of three buckets: a 240mm or 280mm all-in-one (AIO) liquid cooler, a 360mm AIO, or a custom loop. The entry tier is a 240mm AIO such as a DeepCool LT series or MSI MAG CoreLiquid. These use a slim aluminium radiator, a modest pump and fans that favour quiet operation over static pressure. They handle a Ryzen 7 or Core Ultra 5 without fuss, but they run out of headroom on a 250W-class chip pushing all cores.

The sweet spot is a 360mm AIO like the Arctic Liquid Freezer III or Corsair Nautilus RS. More radiator surface area means the coolant sheds heat at a lower fan speed, so you get lower noise at the same load. The cold plate and pump matter too. Better units have a finer microchannel plate that moves heat into the coolant faster, and a pump that holds flow steady without whining.

Enthusiast gear (Corsair iCUE Link, NZXT Kraken Elite, ASUS ROG Ryujin) adds LCD screens, software control, and sometimes a thicker radiator. Thermally, though, a premium 360mm is often within a few degrees of a good sweet-spot unit. That is where diminishing returns kick in. Custom loops with hard tubing, reservoirs and separate pumps add real capacity, especially if you cool the GPU as well, but they cost far more and need maintenance.

Before you spend big, check whether a dual-tower air cooler from CPU Cooling would do the job. Something like the Thermalright Peerless Assassin gets surprisingly close to a 240mm AIO, with no pump to fail.

Upgrading and technical nuances

Radiator size is not the whole story. Radiator thickness and fin density decide which fans suit it. A thick, dense core needs high static pressure fans to push air through it, while a thin, open-fin core works fine with quieter airflow-focused fans. This is why a cheap 360mm can be louder than a well-designed 280mm under the same load.

Pump design has moved on, too. Many current AIOs put the pump in the CPU block, and that block can be large and heavy. Some designs, like the Arctic Liquid Freezer III, add a small fan over the VRM area to keep motherboard temps in check. Air coolers blow air over the VRM heatsinks without being asked, but an AIO does not. On a hot-running board with a CPUs & Processors pick like a Ryzen 9 or Core Ultra 9, that missing airflow can push VRM temps up if your case airflow is weak.

Platform nuances matter. AM5 uses the same cooler mounting holes as AM4, but the socket is LGA-style, so make sure the bracket is the correct one. For LGA1851, many coolers that fit LGA1700 work through the same mounting hole spacing, but the Core Ultra chips have different hot spots. Some brands offer contact frames or revised cold plates for better heat transfer. Check the cooler's compatibility page rather than assuming. Also look at Motherboards from lines like ASUS TUF, MSI Tomahawk and Gigabyte AORUS, which often have solid VRM heatsinks that help when you move away from a big air tower.

Custom loops are a different game. Brands like EK, Alphacool and Bykski offer blocks for both CPU and Graphics Cards / GPU, but GPU blocks are model-specific. If you change cards, you often need a new block. Mixed metals, such as copper and nickel-plated parts, plus aluminium, can cause corrosion, so stick with compatible materials and a proper coolant.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with the case. Look at radiator support in your Computer Cases listing, and check the exact spot: front, top or side. Top mounting often clashes with tall RAM or the motherboard's VRM heatsinks. A 360mm top radiator can fall short of clearance by a few millimetres once you add fans, so measure the total stack: radiator thickness plus fan thickness plus the gap to your board.

Tubing length matters too. A 360mm radiator mounted at the front might need long tubes to reach the CPU, and some AIOs have tubes that are too short for a full-tower layout. Orientation is another gotcha. Keep the pump block lower than the highest point of the radiator, otherwise air collects in the pump and causes noise or worse. Top-mounted radiators with tubes at the bottom trap air at the pump.

Check Desktop Memory height as well. DDR5 kits with tall heat spreaders, such as the Corsair Vengeance, can clash with a top-mounted radiator's fans. Low-profile kits like the Kingston Fury Beast avoid the problem.

Power and cabling are easy to overlook. AIOs often need a USB 2.0 header for software, a pump header, and several fan connectors. Make sure your board has enough headers, or buy a hub from Cables & Connectors. A reliable Power Supplies unit, like a Seasonic Focus or Corsair RMx, keeps everything stable. If you want a more specific unit, browse ATX Power Supply options with native 12V-2x6 connectors.

Brands and local warranty

Reputable AIO brands include Arctic, Corsair, NZXT, DeepCool, Lian Li, Thermalright, MSI and ASUS. For custom loops, look at EK, Alphacool and Bykski. Each has its own strengths: Arctic is known for value and thermal performance, Corsair and NZXT for software and aesthetics, Lian Li for build quality, and DeepCool for the best budget options.

Water cooling carries a risk that air cooling doesn't: a leak can wreck other components. Under the Australian Consumer Law, you have rights to a repair, replacement or refund if the product fails within a reasonable period, but these claims are much smoother when you buy from a local retailer that handles warranty directly. Importing from overseas can leave you shipping a heavy, liquid-filled cooler back to another country. Keep your invoice, register the product if the brand asks, and check the warranty length. Good AIOs commonly carry 3 to 6 years.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 360mm AIO always better than a 240mm?

Not always, but usually. A larger radiator gives you more surface area, so it can run quieter at the same temperature. However, a good 280mm can beat a poorly designed 360mm. Look at the radiator thickness, fan quality and independent test results, not just the size.

Will an AIO fit my case?

Check your case's radiator support list for each mounting position, then measure the clearance for RAM and VRM heatsinks. Front mounts are the easiest. Top mounts need more checking.

Do AIOs need maintenance?

Most sealed AIOs need none, though dust filters and radiator fins should be cleaned. Pumps wear out over time, and a loud or rattling pump is your warning sign. Custom loops need coolant changes every year or so.

Can I use an AIO with AM5 and LGA1851?

Yes, if the cooler lists support for both. Most current models include both brackets, but older units may need an extra kit.

Is water cooling worth it over air?

If you have a high-end CPU, a small case with poor airflow, or want a clean look, yes. For midrange chips, a good air cooler is quieter, cheaper and has fewer parts to fail.
