Collection: Audio

Which audio setup do you actually need?

Most PC builders overspend on the wrong part of the chain. In audio, the biggest gains come from the transducer first (the driver in your headphones or the cones in your speakers), then fit and room, then the DAC and amp, and only last from fancy cables or software. Get that order wrong and you end up with a flashy headset that still sounds like a shoebox.

Entry-level gear, like budget USB headsets and basic 2.0 desktop speakers, uses small dynamic drivers with a boosted bass hump to sound exciting. The cheap DAC chip and amp are usually fine. The weak points are driver distortion at volume, flimsy boom mics and mushy tuning. Sweet-spot gear is where engineering shows up. Think Sennheiser HD 560S or Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones paired with a separate mic, a SteelSeries Arctis Nova or HyperX Cloud headset, or Edifier R1280 and Audioengine A2+ speakers. You get cleaner frequency response, lower distortion and better build.

Enthusiast gear, such as Sennheiser HD 600 and 800 series, planar magnetic headphones, or active monitors like JBL 305P, brings finer detail, better imaging and lower distortion, but it often wants proper amplification. Diminishing returns hit hard here. A 300 ohm headphone needs a decent amp for volume and control, but a 32 ohm pair does not. Spending triple on a DAC when your headphones are the limit achieves very little.

Wireless is its own trade-off. A 2.4GHz dongle gives low latency for gaming. Bluetooth is convenient, but codec support (SBC, AAC, aptX, LC3) and added delay matter, especially for competitive play or video sync.

Upgrading and technical nuances

Before buying anything, check what your Motherboards already offers. Many current AM5 and LGA1851 boards ship with Realtek ALC1220 or ALC4080 codecs, and the ALC4080 is wired over USB internally, which isolates it nicely from board noise. For most headphones and powered speakers, that is already good enough. The difference between a mid-range board and a premium one is usually shielding, capacitor choice and amp quality, not the codec itself.

A dedicated sound card or external DAC/amp earns its place when you run high-impedance headphones, hear electrical noise, or want better output stage design. Creative Sound Blaster AE-5 Plus and AE-9 cards add a headphone amp and software features. An external unit from FiiO, Topping, SMSL or JDS Labs usually delivers cleaner measured performance for the money and avoids the electrical mess inside a PC case. If you hear whining that rises with GPU load, that is coil whine or interference leaking into the analogue path. A USB DAC sidesteps most of it. Your Graphics Cards / GPU and Power Supplies are the usual noise sources.

On microphones, USB models like the Rode NT-USB+, Shure MV7+, Elgato Wave:3 and HyperX QuadCast are plug-and-play and sit in the sweet spot. XLR options like the Shure SM7B sound superb but need a clean interface such as a Focusrite Scarlett and lots of gain. Dynamic mics reject room noise better, while condensers capture more detail but also more keyboard clatter. Headset boom mics are convenient, though they are almost always narrowband and compressed.

If you plan to use Bluetooth, check whether your board's Wi-Fi module supports it, or consider a separate adapter from Networking, such as a TP-Link Bluetooth dongle. Support for newer codecs depends on both the adapter and the headphones.

Practical things to check before buying

Start with the connection. A single 3.5mm TRRS headset plug will not work properly on a desktop with separate mic and headphone sockets, so you need a split adapter from Cables & Connectors. USB-C headsets and DACs need a free port with enough power, and bus-powered amps can struggle with hungry headphones.

Check your case front panel too. A budget enclosure from Computer Cases might have a poor HD Audio header cable, which can add hiss. The rear I/O or a USB DAC is often cleaner. If you are eyeing a PCIe sound card, confirm that a big GPU is not blocking the x1 slot.

For speakers, measure your desk. A 4 inch woofer suits a small desk, a 5 inch gives more bass but needs space. Rear-ported models (like many Edifier units) want breathing room from the wall or the bass turns boomy. Pair them with a decent Monitors setup and avoid relying on the monitor's built-in speakers, which are thin and tinny. Using HDMI or DisplayPort audio to a monitor's headphone jack is convenient but usually low in quality.

For headphones, think about comfort first. Clamping force, weight, pad material and size matter over long sessions, and glasses wearers should be wary of tight, thin pads. Open-back headphones sound spacious but leak sound both ways, so they are no good in a shared room. Closed-back models isolate better.

Finally, think about system noise. Loud fans work against good audio, so quiet airflow from Fans, Heatsinks & Cooling and a sensible CPU Cooling setup protects your listening environment.

Brands and local warranty

Reputable names to look for include Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, beyerdynamic, HyperX, SteelSeries, Logitech G, Razer, Corsair, Creative, Edifier, Audioengine, JBL, Rode and Shure. Each has strengths. Sennheiser and Audio-Technica are strong on sound, gaming brands lead on features and mics, and Edifier tends to deliver strong speaker value.

Genuine Australian warranty support matters more with audio than people think. Hinges, cables, ear pads and wireless batteries are common failure points. Gear bought through an Australian retailer is covered by Australian Consumer Law and the manufacturer's local warranty, while grey imports can leave you shipping overseas or arguing over repairs. Keep your invoice, register the product if the brand requires it, and check the warranty length before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a dedicated sound card for modern PC audio?

Usually not. Modern motherboard audio is decent for most headphones and speakers. A dedicated DAC/amp only makes sense for high-impedance headphones, noticeable interference, or extra outputs and features.

Is a headset or separate headphones and mic better?

Separate headphones and a mic generally sound better and can be upgraded piece by piece. A good headset is simpler, lighter on desk space and fine for casual gaming and calls.

What impedance should I look for?

Anything under about 80 ohms works with most motherboards and USB dongles. Higher figures, like 250 to 300 ohms, benefit from a proper amp. Sensitivity also matters, so check both.

Is wireless good enough for gaming?

A 2.4GHz dongle headset is, with low latency. Bluetooth is better for casual listening and mobile devices, since added delay and codec limits can be noticeable in fast games.

Will expensive cables improve sound?

No meaningful improvement for ordinary analogue or USB connections. A well-made cable with solid connectors is enough. Spend that money on better drivers or a cleaner DAC.
