Which type of laptop accessories do you actually need?

Most PC builders I talk to treat laptop accessories as an afterthought, then wonder why their thin-and-light chokes the moment they plug in two monitors and an SSD. The tiers matter more than the price tags suggest, so it's worth knowing what changes inside the box.

Take docks and hubs first. An entry-level USB-C hub is usually a single bridge chip splitting one USB 3.2 Gen 1 link (5Gbps) between HDMI, USB-A ports and an SD reader. Everything shares that bandwidth, so copying files while driving a 4K display can stutter. A sweet-spot USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 dock gets 40Gbps to work with, enough for dual displays, a fast external drive and gigabit or 2.5GbE at once. Enthusiast Thunderbolt 5 docks add 80Gbps (120Gbps boosted for displays) and suit high-refresh external Monitors. Diminishing returns hit hard here. If you run one 4K 60Hz display and a few peripherals, USB4 is plenty.

Chargers follow similar logic. Cheap 65W bricks use older silicon and run hot. Modern gallium nitride (GaN) chargers switch more efficiently, so they're smaller and cooler at the same wattage. The step up to 100W or 140W only matters if your laptop actually draws that much under CPU and GPU load.

Stands and cooling pads are where people overspend. A solid aluminium stand improves ergonomics and passively sheds heat through the chassis. A cooling pad only helps if your laptop has bottom intake vents and the pad moves real airflow. Cheap pads with tiny, noisy sleeve-bearing fans do very little. Larger 140mm fans on fluid or rifle bearings are quieter and push more air, which is the same principle as any good case fan from our Fans, Heatsinks & Cooling range.

Upgrading and technical nuances

The biggest trap is the USB-C port itself. A USB-C connector can be anything from a charge-only port to full Thunderbolt 5. Check your laptop's spec sheet for Thunderbolt, USB4 or DisplayPort Alt Mode support before buying a dock. Plenty of budget and mid-range laptops have ports limited to 10Gbps with no video output at all.

Power delivery has its own nuances. USB PD 3.1 Extended Power Range goes up to 240W, but your laptop negotiates what it needs. A 140W Anker Prime or Ugreen Nexode charger will happily run a 65W ultrabook, so buying bigger gives flexibility when you upgrade later. Gaming laptops with 180W or 240W proprietary barrel chargers generally can't be fully replaced by USB-C, so keep the original brick.

On external storage, the difference between tiers is controller and NAND quality. Entry portable SSDs often throttle after a few gigabytes of sustained writes because they lack thermal mass and use DRAM-less controllers. Sweet-spot options like the Samsung T7 Shield, SanDisk Extreme and Crucial X9 hold around 800 to 1000MB/s consistently. Enthusiast drives such as the Samsung T9 or a WD_BLACK P40 use 20Gbps links and better heat spreading. For maximum speed and value, you can also build your own with an NVMe enclosure and a drive from our Solid State Drives (SSD) range. Pick an enclosure with a proper aluminium body and a Thunderbolt or USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 bridge if you want to keep speeds high.

For displays, base Apple silicon chips only support one or two external screens natively, regardless of dock. DisplayLink docks work around that with software compression, but they add CPU overhead and aren't great for gaming. Native Thunderbolt MST or DSC docks like the CalDigit TS4 or Belkin Thunderbolt docks are cleaner when your laptop supports them.

If you use a laptop alongside a desktop, a docking setup with a KVM switch can share peripherals between both. Doing so makes it easier to keep your Computers and portables in one workspace.

Practical things to check before buying

Cable quality is the sneakiest failure point. A dock rated for 40Gbps is useless with a basic USB 2.0 charging cable. Look for certified Thunderbolt or USB4 cables, ideally under 1 metre for passive 40Gbps. Our Cables & Connectors range covers the right lengths and ratings. Longer passive cables drop to lower speeds, so active cables are needed past about 1 to 2 metres.

Check physical fit too. Chunky docks and dongles can block adjacent ports on the laptop, especially on thin machines with closely spaced USB-C sockets. Wide-body USB-A adapters are common offenders. If you're buying a stand, check the weight rating and whether it blocks the underside vents. Heavy 16 and 17-inch gaming laptops need a stand with a rigid base, not a foldable plastic one that flexes.

Thermals matter for docks as well. Compact multi-port hubs get properly warm when driving 4K video and charging at 100W. Aluminium bodies spread that heat better than plastic ones, and a hot dock can drop Ethernet or USB connections mid-session.

For networking, if Wi-Fi is flaky or you want faster wired transfers, a 2.5GbE USB-C adapter paired with a decent router from TP-Link or other Networking gear often fixes more problems than a new laptop would. Make sure the adapter uses a Realtek RTL8156 or similar well-supported chipset, as driver support varies on Linux and older Windows builds.

Finally, check the charger's compatibility with airline and travel rules. Power banks over 100Wh generally need airline approval, and the labelling should be clear on the unit.

Brands and local warranty

For docks and hubs, look at CalDigit, Belkin, Anker, Ugreen, Kensington and Plugable. For chargers, Anker, Ugreen, Baseus and Belkin cover most needs. External storage from Samsung, SanDisk, Crucial and WD is dependable. For stands and bags, Rain Design, Twelve South, Targus and Kensington are widely stocked. Peripherals from Logitech and Razer round out the desk.

Australian warranty matters more than most people think. Chargers and docks carry mains voltage and sensitive power negotiation, and a faulty one can damage a laptop. Genuine local stock means compliance with Australian electrical safety standards (look for the RCM mark), and an RMA through a local channel instead of a weeks-long overseas return. Grey imports often void that support entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Thunderbolt for a laptop dock?

Not always. If your laptop supports DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C, a good USB-C dock handles one or two displays. Thunderbolt or USB4 becomes worthwhile when you want multiple 4K screens, fast storage and wired networking at once.

Will any USB-C charger work with my laptop?

Physically yes, but wattage matters. A charger below your laptop's rating will charge slowly or not at all under load. Matching or exceeding the wattage with a PD-certified GaN charger is the safe approach.

Are cooling pads worth it?

They help on laptops with bottom intake vents and sustained loads like gaming or rendering. On thin ultrabooks with passive or rear-venting designs, a stand does more good than a pad.

Can I use a portable SSD as my main game drive?

Yes, for most games, as long as the drive sustains good speeds and your laptop port supports at least 10Gbps. Load times will be slower than internal NVMe, but fine for a library overflow.

How do I know a cable supports full speed?

Look for the Thunderbolt or USB4 40Gbps logo, not just "USB-C" on the packaging. Certified cables are marked, and shorter lengths are safer for passive cables.
